A shocking act of cruelty has left many Nigerians — and indeed, Africans across the continent — speechless, as a couple was arrested after allegedly abandoning their two-year-old daughter in a bush in the dead of night.

In what can only be described as a deeply troubling act, a young girl — just two years old — was rescued after her parents allegedly left her alone in a bush along the Kadawene–Mbradan road in the Dunkwa-On-Offin area of Ghana’s Central Region. The incident, which happened around midnight, has sparked widespread outrage across social media and beyond.

What Happened?

According to reports, the little girl was found abandoned along a lonely bush road late at night — a time when no child, let alone a toddler, should be anywhere near such a dangerous environment. Thankfully, she was discovered and rescued before any serious harm could come to her.

The couple, identified as the child’s parents, were subsequently arrested by authorities and are currently facing questioning over the disturbing incident.

A Reminder Closer to Home

While this incident occurred in Ghana, it hits close to home for many Nigerians. Child abandonment, unfortunately, is not a foreign concept on our shores. From babies left at motor parks in Lagos to infants abandoned outside churches in Anambra, the issue remains a painful reality that our society must confront head-on.

As Nigerians, we know the saying: “It takes a village to raise a child.” But what happens when the very people entrusted with a child’s care become the greatest threat to their safety?

The Weight of Parenthood

Every child deserves love, protection, and a safe home — not a bush path in the middle of the night. Whatever struggles a parent may be going through — financial hardship, mental health challenges, or domestic crises — abandoning a toddler in the bush is never the answer.

Nigeria has welfare organisations, NGOs, churches, mosques, and community support systems that can step in during moments of crisis. Parents in desperate situations are encouraged to reach out rather than take actions that could cost a child their life.

Authorities Must Act

The arrest of this couple is a step in the right direction. Across West Africa, child protection laws must be enforced with zero tolerance. In Nigeria, the Child Rights Act exists to protect children from abuse, neglect, and abandonment — but enforcement remains inconsistent across states.

We must do better — as parents, as communities, and as a society.
