A woman with ties to a Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorist family has successfully escaped from an insurgent hideout in the Mandara Mountains and surrendered herself to troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Borno State.

Military sources confirmed the development, which represents another significant breakthrough in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the Northeast region.

Details of the Escape

The woman, whose identity has been withheld for security reasons, reportedly fled from one of the terrorist enclaves hidden within the rugged terrain of the Mandara Mountains, a known stronghold for remnants of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters.

According to military officials, she voluntarily surrendered to troops conducting operations under the auspices of Operation Hadin Kai, the Nigerian military’s counter-terrorism campaign in the Northeast.

Growing Trend of Surrenders

This latest surrender adds to the increasing number of Boko Haram and ISWAP members, including combatants and their families, who have abandoned the insurgency in recent months. The trend has been attributed to sustained military pressure, improved intelligence gathering, and deteriorating conditions within terrorist camps.

Military authorities have established protocols for receiving and profiling surrendered insurgents and their associates, ensuring proper documentation and integration into rehabilitation programmes.

Operation Hadin Kai’s Success

Operation Hadin Kai, which replaced Operation Lafiya Dole in 2021, has recorded notable successes in degrading terrorist capabilities across Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states. The operation combines kinetic and non-kinetic approaches, including targeted airstrikes, ground offensives, and community engagement initiatives.

The Nigerian military continues to encourage insurgents to lay down their arms and surrender, offering them opportunities for rehabilitation and reintegration into society through various government programmes.

This development underscores the ongoing progress in the fight against insurgency in Northeast Nigeria, even as security forces remain vigilant against residual threats in the region.
