Summary: Nollywood actress Peggy Ovire shares the painful story of how she helped a man get an education, only to be dumped. Find out why she advises women to focus on themselves first.
Omo, this ‘build with him sis’ debate on the internet will never get old. Every day, we see stories that either encourage it or warn against it like a plague. But when a celebrity comes with her own receipts, everybody sits up to listen.
Well, Nollywood actress Peggy Ovire, now happily married to the one and only Frederick Leonard, has decided to drop her own two kobo on the matter. She just shared a story from her past that will make you rethink everything you know about “supporting your man.”
The Gist: Breakfast Was Served Hot!
It all started when Peggy saw an Instagram post that read, “The only person a man h@tes is the woman that helps him build.”
Reacting to the post, the actress revealed that it was the literal story of her life. She dropped a comment detailing a painful experience from her 20s that sounds all too familiar to many Nigerian women.
She wrote:
> “Story of my life… This was me in my 20s, I’ll help, I’ll advise, I’ll put in my all… They’ll still misbehave. The one I advised to go to school, did Masters, Omo! The day he wore his suit for his first job, was the day he said ‘You’re not my type’. I cried my eyes out…”
Can you imagine the pain? After all the pushing, advising, and emotional support, the moment the guy levelled up, he decided she was no longer good enough. Na premium breakfast be that!
The Lesson: “I Stopped Building With Any Man”
According to Peggy, that experience and others like it taught her a very sharp lesson. She decided to change her approach to relationships completely.
She continued in her comment:
> “But you know the beautiful thing? God has the final say… I stopped building with any man. I was focused on me, built myself, and the man I’m supposed to be with, found me. I’m not saying don’t support, I’m just saying be wise.”
Nawa o! Her story is hitting home for so many people because let’s be honest, how many women have seen this movie before? You support a man, push him, advise him, and the moment he ‘blows’, he suddenly remembers you’re not his type. Wahala for who no wise up!
The beautiful thing, as Peggy herself said, is that “God has the final say.” Today, she’s thriving and happily married. It seems her strategy of focusing on herself and letting a man come to her already built (or build himself) paid off big time.
So, what do you think? Is Peggy right? Is “building with a man” a recipe for heartbreak, or are there still good men out there who appreciate a supportive partner?
