E be like say some people never still understand say Lagos no dey smile when it comes to keeping the environment clean. The story wey just land now from Shomolu area of Lagos State is a big lesson for everybody.

According to the gist, one woman identified as Mrs. McCarthy, who lives at No. 56 Adaranijo Street, Pedro, Shomolu, has entered proper government trouble. Wetin she do? She allegedly told her own child to carry their house refuse and pour it straight inside a covered gutter.

Can you imagine? Instead of bagging their waste properly and waiting for LAWMA or their PSP operator, she decided to turn the public drainage system into her personal dustbin. And to make matters worse, she sent her small child to do the dirty work! What kind of home training is that?

Well, as we know, in this Lagos, eyes are always watching. Before she could say “Eko o ni baje,” authorities from the Lagos State government landed at her building and promptly arrested her. The “I don’t know” or “It’s a small thing” excuse no work this time.

Why This Is A Serious Matter

Let’s be clear, this is not a small issue. This is the exact kind of behaviour that causes serious problems for all of us. When people dump refuse in the gutter, what happens?

1. Blocked Gutters: The refuse blocks the free flow of water.
2. Serious Flooding: When rain falls, even small rain, the water has nowhere to go. Next thing, the whole street is flooded. People’s properties get destroyed, and movement becomes impossible.
3. Spreading Sickness: Dirty, stagnant water in the gutters becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes and diseases like cholera and typhoid.

The government is spending billions of Naira to clear drainages and manage waste, yet some people will use their own hands to spoil the work.

This arrest of Mrs. McCarthy should serve as a big warning to everyone. Lagos State is not playing games with environmental laws. Your gutter is for water, not for your leftover eba, plastic bottles, or nylon bags.

Let’s all do the right thing. Bag your waste properly and dispose of it through the right channels. Teach your children the right way to do things. The excuse “na pikin I send” will not save you when wahala bursts.

Na all of us get Lagos, make we join hands keep am clean. Don’t be the reason your neighbourhood turns into a swimming pool when the next rain falls
