The US President’s unexpected shoutout to the Trinidad-born rap queen has set social media ablaze
—
US President Donald Trump has sent the internet into a frenzy after publicly complimenting rapper Nicki Minaj’s backside during a campaign rally held in Port Huron, Michigan.
The moment, which was captured on video and quickly spread across social media platforms like wildfire, has triggered a storm of reactions from fans, critics, and political commentators alike — and trust Nigerians on Twitter (now X) to have plenty to say about it.
Speaking at the rally, Trump — never one to shy away from controversy — paused to shower praise on the Trinidadian-born rap superstar, who is beloved by millions of fans across Africa, including a massive fanbase here in Nigeria.
Nigerians React
As expected, Nigerian social media users wasted no time jumping on the trend. From Lagos to Abuja, the reactions ranged from outright laughter to genuine surprise that the leader of the world’s most powerful nation would use a political rally to compliment a rapper’s physique.
Many Nigerian fans of the Super Freaky Girl crooner found the moment both hilarious and surreal, with several X users comparing it to the kind of unexpected drama that only Nicki Minaj’s orbit seems to attract.
Nicki Minaj’s Nigerian Connection
Nicki Minaj, who has long enjoyed a strong and loyal fanbase in Nigeria, has previously shown love for Afrobeats and Nigerian culture. Her acknowledgement of African music and her collaborations within the global Black music space have endeared her to many fans on the continent.
Whether the Anaconda rapper herself will respond to Trump’s unusual compliment remains to be seen — but knowing Nicki, she is unlikely to let such a moment pass without comment.
