A sobering reminder of the dangers faced daily by electricity workers across Nigeria
It is with heavy hearts that we report the passing of an operations staff member of MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL), who lost his life after sustaining a fatal electric shock while carrying out routine maintenance work at Eke, in the Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.
What Happened?
The deceased, an MEDL operations worker, was on active duty — doing the kind of work that keeps electricity flowing to our homes, offices, and businesses — when the tragic incident occurred. He suffered severe electrocution during the maintenance exercise, and sadly, he did not survive.
A Dangerous Job That Often Goes Unrecognised
For many Nigerians, power supply issues are a daily frustration. We complain about estimated billing, transformer faults, and endless outages — and rightly so. But incidents like this one force us to pause and acknowledge the human beings on the other side of that equation.
Electricity distribution workers across Nigeria — whether under EEDC, IKEDC, EKEDC, or any of the other DisCos — face life-threatening conditions regularly. They climb poles, handle high-voltage lines, and work in environments where a single mistake or equipment failure can cost them their lives.
This young man paid the ultimate price simply for showing up to work.
Condolences and Calls for Safety
While full details surrounding the incident are still emerging, this tragedy raises important questions that electricity distribution companies across the country must urgently address:
– Are field workers provided with adequate personal protective equipment (PPE)?
– Is there proper safety training before workers are deployed for maintenance tasks?
– Are standard safety protocols being strictly followed on the field?
These are not bureaucratic questions — they are matters of life and death.
Our Thoughts Are With His Family
To the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, we extend our deepest condolences. Losing a loved one is never easy, and losing them in the line of duty makes the grief even harder to bear. May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may God grant his family the strength to navigate this painful season.
This incident serves as a wake-up call for electricity distribution companies in Nigeria to prioritise the safety and welfare of their workers. No kilowatt of power is worth a human life.
