A dark cloud has settled over the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) community in Ile-Ife as news breaks of the alleged suicide of Oluwole Seun, a final-year student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
The OAU community is currently in shock and mourning following the tragic and untimely death of one of its own. Oluwole Seun, who was reportedly on the verge of completing his academic journey at one of Nigeria’s most prestigious universities, allegedly took his own life under circumstances that are yet to be fully understood.
What We Know So Far
Oluwole was a student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering — a demanding and highly technical programme. As a final-year student, he was likely in the thick of projects, examinations, and the pressures that come with rounding off university education in Nigeria.
The motive behind his heartbreaking decision remains unclear at this time, and investigations are said to be ongoing.
A Painful Reminder About Mental Health
This tragedy is a sobering reminder that mental health struggles are real, and they do not discriminate — not by grade, not by school, not by social status. Many Nigerian students silently battle depression, anxiety, financial pressure, academic stress, and family expectations, often without access to adequate support systems.
Too many of our young people are suffering in silence because of the stigma attached to mental health conversations in our society. We must do better.
