Former BBNaija housemate Pere Egbi has stirred fresh controversy online after calling out Nigerians who were busy discussing the outcome of the U.S. midterm elections — telling them bluntly to redirect that energy toward home.
—
Pere Egbi, the sharp-tongued BBNaija star many Nigerians came to love (and love to argue with) during his time in the Big Brother house, is back in the headlines — and this time, it has nothing to do with reality TV drama.
The actor and entrepreneur, who holds U.S. citizenship, took to social media to drag Nigerians who were actively following and debating the results of the American midterm elections. His message? Simple — face front.
“You Have Tinubu at Home, Focus There”
Pere’s frustration was clear as he called out his fellow Nigerians for investing energy and passion into American politics while pressing issues back home continue to pile up. With President Bola Tinubu’s administration still relatively fresh and Nigerians grappling with fuel subsidy removal, rising costs of living, and an unstable naira, Pere clearly felt the misplaced priorities were worth addressing.
His message essentially boiled down to: “You live in Nigeria. American elections are not your business. Hold your own leaders accountable.”
Nigerians React — As Only Nigerians Can
Of course, this being Nigerian Twitter (now X), the reactions were swift, spicy, and divided.
Some agreed with Pere wholeheartedly, arguing that many Nigerians channel enormous passion into foreign politics while remaining disengaged or helpless about what happens in Abuja. Others, however, pushed back — pointing out that in today’s interconnected world, American politics has real consequences for Nigeria, from diaspora remittances to foreign policy decisions that affect the continent.
A few sharp tongues also reminded Pere that as a U.S. citizen himself, he perhaps has the least standing to tell others not to care about American elections.
A Valid Point Wrapped in Controversy?
Whether you agree with Pere or not, his underlying point touches on a real conversation Nigerians continue to have — about civic engagement, political apathy, and where we direct our collective outrage.
It is not uncommon to see Nigerians passionately dissect every twist and turn of American, British, or even French elections, while local government elections in their own states go largely undiscussed. The energy is there — the question is always about where it gets pointed.
Pere may have delivered his message with his trademark bluntness, but the conversation he sparked is one worth having.
