The Bauchi State Government is mourning the loss of one of its top civil servants who passed away in the Holy Land during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage.

Shehu Yahaya Jalam, who served as the Permanent Secretary for Special Services in the Office of the Secretary to the Bauchi State Government, died in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, while performing the 2026 Hajj.

A Dedicated Public Servant Gone Too Soon

The news of Jalam’s passing has sent shockwaves through Bauchi State’s civil service and the wider community. As a permanent secretary, he held one of the most senior positions in the state’s administrative structure, overseeing special services under the Secretary to the State Government.

His death comes as hundreds of thousands of Nigerian Muslims, including many from Bauchi State, are currently in Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj pilgrimage—one of the five pillars of Islam that every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it must undertake at least once in their lifetime.

The Risks of Hajj Pilgrimage

Every year, the Hajj attracts millions of worshippers from around the world to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. The physically demanding nature of the pilgrimage, combined with the Saudi Arabian heat and large crowds, can pose health challenges for pilgrims, especially elderly participants or those with underlying medical conditions.

Nigerian authorities and the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) typically put medical teams and support systems in place to assist pilgrims during their spiritual journey. Despite these precautions, medical emergencies and deaths do occasionally occur.

A Community in Mourning

The Bauchi State Government and the family of the late permanent secretary are expected to release official statements regarding funeral arrangements and tributes in the coming days.

For many Nigerians, dying while performing Hajj is considered a blessed departure, as Islamic tradition holds that those who pass away during this sacred pilgrimage receive special mercy from Allah.

May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may Allah grant his family, colleagues, and the people of Bauchi State the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss. Ameen.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased and all Nigerian pilgrims currently performing the 2026 Hajj. May Allah accept their worship and grant them safe return to their loved ones.
