Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have once again shown that their eyes are wide open — intercepting consignments of cocaine cleverly hidden inside a local mortar and the false bottom of a backpack, both packaged and ready for shipment to China and Italy.
The seizure, made in Lagos, is yet another reminder that drug traffickers are becoming increasingly creative in their methods — but so too are the men and women on the frontlines fighting Nigeria’s drug menace.
Using Mama’s Mortar to Move Hard Drugs?
In what many Nigerians would describe as sheer audacity, smugglers apparently thought hiding cocaine inside a locally-made mortar — the kind you’d find in virtually every Nigerian kitchen — would throw law enforcement off the scent. The everyday nature of the item was clearly chosen to avoid suspicion, but NDLEA operatives were not deceived.
The mortar, a staple of Nigerian households used daily for pounding pepper, crayfish, and spices, was repurposed as a vessel for one of the world’s most dangerous substances. This brazen move underscores the lengths to which drug cartels will go to exploit familiar, innocent-looking items.
Backpack with a Deadly Secret
Alongside the mortar, a backpack with a specially constructed false bottom was also intercepted. Hidden compartments in luggage have long been a trick in the trafficker’s playbook, but NDLEA’s operatives — armed with experience, technology, and sharp instincts — were not fooled.
The consignments were destined for China and Italy, two key nodes in global drug trafficking networks, suggesting the involvement of international syndicates with reach far beyond Nigeria’s borders.

This latest bust is consistent with the NDLEA’s increasingly aggressive posture under the leadership of Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), who has overseen a significant ramping up of operations since taking the helm of the agency. From airports to seaports and courier hubs, no channel appears to be off-limits for the agency’s scrutiny.
Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial capital and busiest logistics hub, remains a prime target for drug traffickers looking to exploit the city’s high volume of international movement. However, it is also where NDLEA operatives have recorded some of their most significant seizures.

For anyone tempted to become a drug mule or facilitate the movement of narcotics — whether for quick cash or under duress — the message from NDLEA is crystal clear: There is no clever enough hiding spot. Whether it is tucked inside your grandmother’s mortar or sewn into the lining of your bag, the agency is watching.
Drug trafficking remains a serious offence in Nigeria, carrying heavy penalties including lengthy prison sentences. Beyond the legal consequences, those caught abroad face even harsher treatment in countries like China, where drug-related offences can attract the death penalty.
