The stories we hear from some parts of our country can just make you weak. When a woman loses her husband, you expect her to be comforted, to be surrounded by family and loved ones. But for 26-year-old Mrs. Mercy Sunday, a young widow from Nkerefi community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, her nightmare was just beginning.
Instead of solace after her husband passed away, Mercy was met with pointed accusing fingers from her own in-laws. They claimed she was the one responsible for her husband’s death. Imagine the pain! Before she could even properly mourn the man she loved, she was forced into a battle to prove her innocence.
According to the reports, her husband’s people didn’t just stop at accusations. They subjected the young woman to what can only be described as a wicked and dehumanizing ordeal. They allegedly forced her to undergo a traditional oath-taking ritual to “prove” she had no hand in their son’s demise. In this day and age!
But the cruelty did not end there. After forcing her through that traumatic experience, they still weren’t satisfied. The in-laws reportedly threw Mrs. Mercy Sunday out of her matrimonial home and community.
And here is the part that will break your heart: they didn’t let her go with her children.
Yes, you read that right. A 26-year-old grieving widow, after being accused of murder and forced to swear an oath, was cast out and separated from her own kids. The very children that are her only comfort and a living memory of her late husband.
This story is a painful reminder of the horrible widowhood practices that still persist in some of our communities. How can a family turn on their own son’s wife with such venom and cruelty at her most vulnerable moment? This is not just a family matter; this is a human rights issue. We hope that the relevant authorities and human rights organizations will look into this case and bring justice for Mercy Sunday. No woman deserves to go through this kind of hell.
