Nawa o! The kind of stories we hear in this country can just weak somebody. News reaching us from Ado-Ekiti is that a Magistrate’s Court has ordered a 36-year-old man, identified as Kayode Adepoju, to be kept at a correctional centre.
And for what, you ask? For the alleged r@pe of a small girl of just 14 years. A man old enough to be her father!
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Elijah Adeja, Mr. Adepoju committed this terrible act which is totally against the law. The Inspector made it clear in court that the offence is a serious one, punishable under Section 31 of the Gender-Based Violence (Prohibition) Law of Ekiti State, 2019.
The prosecutor begged the court not to grant the man bail, and asked that he should be remanded in prison so that the police can complete their investigation properly and get legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The Magistrate, Mrs. Olubunmi Bamidele, agreed with the prosecutor. She ordered that Kayode Adepoju should be taken to the correctional centre to cool his heels while they await the DPP’s advice.
The case has been adjourned for now.
