Summary: A fatal accident at New Castle Bus Stop in Lagos claimed one life and left six others injured after a woman was ejected from a commercial bus and crushed by an oncoming trailer.
Lagos State witnessed another heartbreaking road tragedy over the weekend when a female passenger lost her life in a ghastly accident at New Castle Bus Stop, inward Gbagada, along the busy Oworonsoki-Apapa Expressway.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, in a statement released on Sunday, March 8.
How the Accident Happened
According to Taofiq, the incident involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number LSD 654 XY, which suddenly veered off the road and crashed violently into a roadside culvert along the expressway corridor.
“Reports revealed that a Volkswagen commercial bus (LSD 654 XY) veered off course and violently rammed into a roadside culvert along the corridor,” Taofiq explained in the statement.
Woman Ejected and Crushed by Trailer
The impact of the collision was so severe that it forcefully threw a female passenger out of the vehicle onto the main expressway. Tragically, before she could be rescued, an articulated trailer approaching the accident scene ran over her.
“In a tragic turn of events, an oncoming articulated trailer approaching the scene was unable to forestall the sudden occurrence and consequently ran over the passenger who had fallen on the roadway, resulting in her immediate death,” the LASTMA spokesperson stated.
Six Others Injured
The accident didn’t only claim one life—six other occupants of the commercial bus, including the driver, sustained varying degrees of injuries. Some victims reportedly suffered multiple fractures from the violent crash.
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Ambulance Service quickly arrived at the scene and evacuated the injured victims to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Meanwhile, officials of the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit removed the remains of the deceased woman from the accident scene.
Rising Concern Over Lagos Road Safety
This latest tragedy adds to the growing concern about road safety on Lagos highways, particularly along the notoriously busy Oworonsoki-Apapa Expressway, where accidents occur with alarming frequency.
Many Lagosians have continued to call for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, better road maintenance, and improved driver training to reduce the rising number of preventable road accidents in the state.
As investigations into the cause of this particular accident continue, road users are advised to exercise extra caution, especially when traveling on commercial buses and along major expressways.
May the soul of the deceased rest in peace, and we wish those injured a speedy recovery.
