A South African court has handed down life sentences to a woman and her former lover who orchestrated the cold-blooded murder of her husband, a traffic officer, to cash in on his benefits.
The High Court of South Africa, Eastern Cape Division, sitting in Burgersdorp, has sentenced 50-year-old Noxolo Nokuzola Nxilolo and her ex-lover, 42-year-old Mzamo Ciko, to life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of her husband, Sindezama January Nxilolo, who was 65 years old at the time of his death.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) disclosed the sentencing in a statement on Thursday, March 12, 2026, revealing the shocking details of a meticulously planned assassination driven purely by greed.
How the Evil Plot Unfolded
On July 3, 2017, in Eureka, Burgersdorp, within the Joe Gqabi Magisterial District, the convicted duo conspired with two hired assassins from the Western Cape to murder Sindezama, who was a traffic officer and moneylender.
At the time of the murder, Noxolo was 43 years old and had been married to the deceased since 2002. Their relationship began in 1999, though they had no children together.
The trouble started when Noxolo began travelling to the Western Cape for fertility treatment. It was during these trips that she met Ciko, then 35 years old, and the two began a romantic affair. Ciko was also married at the time, but his marriage collapsed when his wife discovered the infidelity. Eventually, Sindezama also learned about his wife’s affair.
Money Was the Motive
According to evidence presented in court, Noxolo and Ciko decided to eliminate Sindezama so that Noxolo could benefit financially. The court heard that she stood to forfeit certain benefits if her husband divorced her—a consequence she was determined to avoid.
To execute their sinister plan, the pair hired two hitmen from the Western Cape and agreed to pay them to carry out the killing.
However, one of the hired killers, Lungile Ntungwana (44), later reported the incident to authorities. He pleaded guilty to his role in the murder and was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment on September 1, 2021. The second assassin remains at large.
The Night of the Murder
The execution of the plan was chillingly coordinated. Ciko sourced two firearms and handed them to the hired killers. He then transported them in his vehicle from the Western Cape to Burgersdorp and showed them where Sindezama lived.
Noxolo’s role was to inform Ciko and the hitmen when her husband was at home. After receiving her confirmation call, Ciko drove the killers to the house after nightfall and dropped them off nearby.
The assassins then called Sindezama under the pretence of requesting a cash loan—a common transaction for the moneylender. When he unsuspectingly came outside, one of the hired killers opened fire, shooting him dead on the spot.
The killers fled the scene and later separated. One returned with Ciko to the Western Cape, while the second remained behind. The following day, the second assassin visited Noxolo’s home to collect money for his return trip, which she provided. Upon his return to the Western Cape, Ciko paid him his share of the blood money.
The Relationship Ends, Justice Catches Up
The relationship between Noxolo and Ciko ended in 2021. Following the murder and the disclosure by the whistleblower, both were arrested and released on bail pending trial.
During the trial, Senior State Advocate Sibusiso Mgenge argued that the murder was carefully planned, executed, and motivated entirely by financial gain.
The court learned that after Sindezama’s death, Noxolo benefited more than R920,000 (approximately ₦77 million) from his pension fund and approximately R320,000 (about ₦27 million) from the sale of their house.
No Remorse, No Mercy
Advocate Mgenge further submitted that Noxolo showed absolutely no remorse. Despite seeking a lighter sentence, she continued to maintain her innocence throughout the proceedings.
During the aggravation and mitigation stage, Noxolo informed the court that she suffers from spinal cord complications, depression since 2018, and high blood pressure. However, despite the overwhelming evidence, including testimony from Ntungwana, she denied any involvement in the murder.
The State successfully proved that the accused acted in execution of a common purpose and conspired to murder the deceased.
Justice Delivered Where the Crime Occurred
Although there is no permanent High Court in Burgersdorp, the matter was finalized and sentenced in the town as part of a sitting of the High Court of South Africa. This allowed residents to witness justice being delivered right where the crime occurred.
The accused were sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and an additional five years’ imprisonment for conspiracy to commit murder. They were also declared unfit to possess firearms.
Welcoming the sentence and the court’s decision to bring services closer to the community, the Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Barry Madolo, said the outcome demonstrates the justice system’s firm stance against premeditated and contract killings.
“This sentence sends a clear message that those who orchestrate and carry out contract killings will face the full might of the law. Bringing the court to the community also reinforces public confidence in the justice system by ensuring that justice is not only done, but seen to be done where the crime occurred,” Madolo stated.
A Warning to Others
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the sentence and commended the court for delivering justice in the community where the crime occurred.
“This outcome underscores the NPA’s commitment to ensuring that those who plan and carry out violent crimes for personal gain are held fully accountable. The NPA remains steadfast in its dedication to protecting the rights of victims, upholding the rule of law, and reinforcing public confidence in the justice system,” the statement concluded.
This case serves as a stark reminder that crime—especially murder motivated by greed—does not pay. The wheels of justice may turn slowly, but they grind thoroughly, and eventually, the truth will always come to light.
