Summary: Tragedy strikes Sokoto as two pregnant kidnap victims deliver babies while held captive by bandits. Family struggles to raise N10 million ransom as community calls for urgent security intervention.

In a heart-wrenching development that highlights the deteriorating security situation in parts of Northern Nigeria, two pregnant women have given birth while being held captive by bandits in Sokoto State.

The women, who were among eight family members abducted from Takatsaba village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area about seven weeks ago, delivered a baby boy and a baby girl respectively in the bandits’ hideout—a situation no expectant mother should ever endure.

The Attack That Shattered a Family

The nightmare began when armed bandits stormed the quiet village of Takatsaba, targeting a single household. In the violent raid, they kidnapped eight people—five women and three men—all from the same family. The attackers also killed an elderly man during the invasion, leaving some children orphaned and a community traumatized.

According to a relative of the victims who spoke to Daily Trust under condition of anonymity, the family has been desperately trying to secure the release of their loved ones.

The Ransom Struggle

“We have been struggling to raise the ransom,” the relative revealed. “Although over eight million naira has been paid, we have not been able to meet the ten million naira demanded by the bandits.”

This astronomical sum represents the cruel reality many Nigerian families face when their loved ones fall victim to kidnapping—a choice between financial ruin and losing family members forever.

A Glimmer of Hope

In what could be considered a small victory, three of the eight captives have managed to escape. Among those who regained their freedom is a nursing mother. The escapees are currently in Zurmi town in neighbouring Zamfara State and are receiving medical attention at a health facility in Sabon Birni.

However, the ordeal continues for the remaining five hostages—three young men and the two women who recently gave birth in captivity.

Urgent Call for Security Intervention

The relative of the victims has made an emotional appeal to security agencies and government authorities to urgently beef up security in the area.

“We need brave security personnel deployed to our communities,” he pleaded, echoing the sentiment of many rural communities across Northern Nigeria who feel abandoned and vulnerable to bandit attacks.

The Bigger Picture

This incident is not isolated. Sokoto State, particularly the Sabon Birni Local Government Area, has witnessed increased bandit activities in recent times. Communities along the Sokoto-Zamfara border have become particularly vulnerable, with residents living in constant fear.

The fact that two women had to deliver their babies in such traumatic circumstances—without proper medical care, in the hands of criminals, and separated from their families—speaks to the urgent need for a comprehensive security overhaul in affected regions.

As these two newborns enter the world under the most distressing circumstances imaginable, one can only hope that security forces will intensify efforts to rescue the remaining captives and bring those responsible to justice.

The situation in Takatsaba village serves as yet another reminder that the security challenges facing parts of Northern Nigeria require immediate, sustained, and strategic intervention from all levels of government.

Our thoughts remain with the victims and their families during this difficult time.
