The Kumbotso local government area of Kano State has been plunged into mourning following a heartbreaking incident that claimed the lives of two teenagers last Friday, March 6th. Sadiq Isyaku and Auwal Isyaku, both aged 18, drowned after falling into an open water body while desperately trying to escape from suspected phone snatchers at Ring Road.

The tragic incident has once again highlighted the growing menace of phone snatching in Nigerian cities and the dangerous lengths young people go to protect their valuables.

How the Incident Unfolded

According to the Kano State Fire Service Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi, the agency received a distress call at their control room from one Muhd Abba, who reported the emergency situation.

“Upon receiving the call, a rescue team from the service headquarters was immediately mobilised to the scene,” Abdullahi explained in an official statement. “On arrival, the team discovered that two 18-year-old youths, Sadiq Isyaku and Auwal Isyaku, had fallen into an open water body.”

Despite the swift response by emergency personnel, both victims were pulled out of the water unconscious and were later confirmed dead at the scene.

The Circumstances Leading to the Tragedy

Preliminary investigations revealed that the two young men were fleeing from suspected phone snatchers who were chasing them at Ring Road when the incident occurred. In their frantic attempt to escape and protect themselves from the criminals, they accidentally fell into a nearby pond.

The bodies of the deceased were subsequently handed over to their father, Ibrahim Shehu, who resides in Unguwa Uku Quarters.

A Growing Problem in Nigerian Cities

This tragic incident brings to the forefront the persistent problem of phone snatching and petty theft that continues to plague many Nigerian cities. Young Nigerians are increasingly becoming targets for criminals who snatch mobile phones, sometimes with fatal consequences.

The incident also raises questions about the safety of public spaces and the presence of uncovered water bodies in residential areas, which pose significant hazards to residents.
