Popular Nigerian dancehall artist Inetimi Timaya Odon, better known as Timaya, has stirred up fresh conversation on social media with his latest remarks about marriage.

In a viral video currently making rounds online, the “I Can’t Kill Myself” crooner was spotted hanging out with fellow music stars Peter Okoye (Mr P) and Phyno when he dropped his controversial advice for single Nigerians.

Timaya’s Bold Statement

Speaking in pidgin English, Timaya didn’t mince words as he shared his perspective on relationships and family planning.

“Just born pikin. Pikin go grow. This marriage thing nor dey work,” the singer said casually during the informal gathering with his colleagues.

His statement essentially translates to advising young people to simply have children without necessarily getting married, as he believes the institution of marriage is problematic.

Not His First Time

This isn’t the first occasion Timaya has publicly expressed his skepticism about marriage. The Bayelsa-born singer has been consistent with his views over the years.

Back in June 2022, Timaya had hinted strongly that he might never walk down the aisle. In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, he made a religious reference to justify his stance.

According to him, Jesus Christ never got married, and since he considers himself “Christ-like,” he sees no compelling reason to follow the conventional path of matrimony.

Timaya’s Family Life

Despite his reservations about marriage, Timaya is very much a family man in his own right. The 44-year-old singer is a proud father of four children from three different women.

He has managed to maintain cordial relationships with the mothers of his children while staying true to his belief that formal marriage isn’t necessary for raising a family.

Mixed Reactions Expected

As expected, Timaya’s latest comments have generated significant buzz on Nigerian social media, with people sharing diverse opinions on his unconventional family philosophy.

While some Nigerians may find his views refreshing and honest, others from more traditional backgrounds might disagree with his stance on such an important cultural institution.

What do you think about Timaya’s advice? Is marriage truly necessary for building a family, or should people focus on what works for them individually? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
