A special education teacher in Washington state faces serious criminal charges after allegedly sexually abusing a young student repeatedly over several months.
Mahayla Benavides, a 32-year-old special education teacher at Stevens Elementary School in Spokane, Washington, has been charged with child rape and child molestation following disturbing allegations from a 10-year-old student.
The Allegations
According to court documents filed by investigators, Benavides allegedly committed these heinous acts against a fourth-grade student under her care. The young victim reportedly told detectives during interviews that the abuse occurred in both the main classroom and a smaller adjacent room within the school premises.
The statement of facts reveals deeply troubling details: the child allegedly told police that the abuse happened almost daily, with some days seeing as many as five separate incidents. The frequency and duration of the alleged abuse has shocked the local community and raised serious questions about student safety in schools.
Evidence Gathered
During their investigation, police reportedly examined Benavides’ mobile phone and discovered disturbing content. According to the statement of facts, investigators found explicit videos that the teacher allegedly created and showed to the student, as well as video evidence of the alleged abuse.
The victim also told authorities that Benavides warned him not to tell anyone about what was happening, threatening that she could lose her job or face serious trouble. In what appears to be an attempt to keep the child silent, she allegedly gave him brownies as gifts.
Swift Action by School Authorities
The Spokane Police Department commended Spokane School District 81 for their quick response once the allegations came to light. In an official press release, police stated:
“Spokane School District 81 acted quickly once this information was brought to their attention, promptly separating Benavides from the child and further school access, and calling police. The school district’s swift actions and cooperation played a vital role in this investigation and prevented further harm.”
Court Proceedings
Benavides appeared in court on Tuesday, March 17, where she entered a not guilty plea to all charges. She is currently being held at Spokane County jail.
During the bail hearing, prosecutors argued for a $750,000 bond, emphasizing the severity of the crimes and describing Benavides as a threat to the community. However, her defence attorney contested this amount, pointing to her financial circumstances and clean criminal record prior to these allegations.
The judge ultimately set bail at $500,000, splitting the difference between the prosecution’s request and the defence’s arguments.
Her trial has been scheduled for May, where she will face the charges in full.
A Reminder About Child Safety
This heartbreaking case serves as a painful reminder that parents and guardians must remain vigilant about their children’s wellbeing, even in environments traditionally considered safe like schools.
Experts advise parents to:
– Maintain open communication with their children about their school experiences
– Pay attention to sudden behavioral changes
– Teach children that no adult should ask them to keep secrets, especially uncomfortable ones
– Create a safe space where children feel comfortable reporting anything that makes them uncomfortable
As this case proceeds through the legal system, our thoughts remain with the young victim and his family as they navigate this difficult time.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
