The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Sa’ad Abubakar III, has officially announced Friday, March 20, 2026, as the date for this year’s Eid-el-Fitr celebration across Nigeria.
The declaration follows the non-sighting of the new moon on Wednesday evening, which would have marked the end of the holy month of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal 1447AH.
Official Announcement from the Sultanate Council
In a statement released by Sambo Wali Junaidu on behalf of the Sultanate Council, it was confirmed that despite efforts by moon sighting committees nationwide, no credible reports of the Shawwal crescent were received from any part of the country on Wednesday.
Consequently, Thursday, March 19, 2026, will mark the completion of the obligatory 30 days of fasting for Ramadan, with Friday becoming the first day of Shawwal and the day Muslims across Nigeria will celebrate Eid-el-Fitr.
Call for Unity and Peace
The Sultan, who also serves as the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), used the occasion to call on all Nigerian Muslims to dedicate their prayers during the Sallah celebration toward fostering peace, unity, and continued progress in the country.
As Muslims prepare to celebrate the completion of the blessed month of Ramadan, the Sultan’s message emphasizes the importance of using this joyous occasion to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and pray for Nigeria’s continued development and harmony.
Eid Mubarak to all Nigerian Muslims!
