Nigerian singer Simi is trending on social media after old tweets from 2014 containing remarks about Igbo people were unearthed by users on X (formerly Twitter).
The screenshots, which went viral over the weekend, show several tweets where the “Duduke” crooner made comments that many have described as containing ethnic stereotypes.
What Did She Say?
In one of the controversial tweets, Simi wrote: “Igbo boys just don’t have swag,” a statement that has since drawn criticism from users who found it offensive.
Another tweet read: “All these oyinbo girls you keep trying to impress are actually crazy about boys with konk igbo accent. What are your priorities?”
She also tweeted during what appeared to be a football match commentary: “Chelsea players with igbo boy behaviour. Is this wrestling?”
Social Media Reactions
The posts have triggered heated debates across social media platforms, with Nigerians divided in their responses.
Some users condemned the tweets outright, calling them insensitive and examples of ethnic prejudice that shouldn’t be overlooked regardless of when they were posted.
Others, however, pointed out that the tweets are over 10 years old and suggested that people should be allowed room to grow and evolve in their thinking, especially considering Simi’s generally positive public image in recent years.
The Bigger Conversation
This incident has reignited conversations about ethnic stereotyping and tribalism in Nigeria, particularly how casually such remarks were made on social media in the past.
It also raises questions about accountability for old social media posts and whether public figures should address controversial statements from their past.
As of press time, Simi has not publicly responded to the resurfaced tweets or the ongoing controversy.
What’s your take? Should she address these old tweets, or is it time to move on? Let us know in the comments.
