The Oyo State Police Command has successfully re-arrested a suspected kidnapper who had earlier escaped from police custody, bringing relief to residents who had expressed concern over security lapses in the state.

The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Ayomide Kareem from Osorun’s Compound in Oyo, was apprehended on Tuesday night, March 17, 2026, around 11:30 p.m. during a routine stop-and-search operation at Irepo Junction in the Ojongbodu area.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, on Wednesday, March 18, operatives attached to the Ojongbodu Area Command intercepted “a suspicious individual observed trekking within the vicinity” during their patrol. Upon questioning, the man was identified as the same suspect who had escaped from police custody at Jobele Division on March 10, 2026, where he was being held in connection with a kidnapping case.

Swift Action Following Community Outrage

The initial escape had sparked protests within the community, with residents expressing frustration over what they perceived as negligence by law enforcement officers. In response to the public outcry, the Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, ordered an intensive manhunt that ultimately led to the suspect’s re-arrest.

The Police Command has not taken the matter lightly. Officers involved in the original custody breach have been detained and are currently undergoing orderly room trial for unprofessional conduct. Additionally, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Jobele Division has been redeployed, and other administrative measures have been implemented to strengthen accountability and professionalism within the force.

Commitment to Public Safety

The statement emphasized that the suspect is currently in custody and cooperating with ongoing investigations into the kidnapping case. The Commissioner of Police also expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police for his “steadfast support and continued commitment to ensuring discipline, professionalism, and operational effectiveness across Commands nationwide.”

Reassuring Oyo residents, the Command pledged its unwavering commitment to maintaining safety and security across the state. “We will not relent in our efforts to bring all perpetrators of crime to justice,” the statement affirmed.

This re-arrest demonstrates the importance of vigilance and collaboration between security agencies and community members in maintaining law and order. As investigations continue, residents of Oyo State can take some comfort in knowing that the police command is taking decisive action to address security concerns and hold its officers accountable for professional lapses.
