Summary: Anambra State Police Command arrests three suspected armed robbers, including an alleged NSCDC officer, following intelligence-led operation in Ogidi. Weapons and fake ID recovered.

The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended three suspected armed robbers, including an alleged serving officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), in a coordinated operation in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area.

The arrest, which has sent shockwaves through the community, was announced by the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement released to journalists in Awka on Sunday, March 22.

How the Operation Unfolded

According to SP Ikenga, operatives from the Rapid Response Squad based in Awkuzu acted on credible intelligence and raided a suspected criminal hideout in Ogidi on Friday, March 21, at approximately 1:46 p.m.

“The latest arrest of three suspected armed robbers and cultists, and the recovery of arms, ammunition, and a stolen petrol tanker in separate operations is a testimony to our commitment to securing lives and property,” Ikenga stated.

The three suspects arrested during the operation have been identified as:
Francis Anene, 46 years old
Emmanuel Obi, 29 years old
Okoye Chinonso, 35 years old

One of the arrested individuals is allegedly a serving member of a security agency, raising serious concerns about insider involvement in criminal activities plaguing the area.

Weapons and Fake Documents Recovered

During the raid, police operatives recovered incriminating items, including:
– Two locally made Beretta pistols
– Four rounds of live 9mm ammunition
– A suspected fake security agency identity card

The recovery of these weapons and the fake ID has strengthened the police’s case against the suspects, who are believed to be part of a larger criminal network.

Links to Armed Robbery, Kidnapping, and Murder

Preliminary investigations have revealed disturbing connections between the arrested suspects and various criminal activities terrorizing Ogidi and surrounding communities.

“Initial findings indicate that the suspects were members of a criminal syndicate allegedly involved in armed robbery, kidnapping, and terrorising residents of Ogidi and its environs,” SP Ikenga disclosed.

In a particularly serious development, the suspects are also being investigated for possible involvement in the murder of the late President-General of Ogidi—a case that has remained a source of pain and concern for the community.

Separate Operation Recovers Stolen Petrol Tanker

In what appears to be an unrelated but equally significant operation, police personnel attached to the Ozubulu Police Division recovered a suspected stolen white petrol tanker on March 17.

The vehicle was found abandoned along the busy Onitsha/Owerri Expressway in the early hours of that day, without a registration number and with no key in the ignition.

“The vehicle was reportedly abandoned by an unidentified individual,” Ikenga explained, adding that the command has commenced investigations to trace the rightful owner of the tanker and determine the circumstances that led to its abandonment.

Ongoing Investigations

The Anambra State Police Command has assured residents that comprehensive investigations into both incidents are ongoing.

Authorities are working to establish all the facts surrounding the arrests, verify the identities and affiliations of the suspects, and determine the full extent of their criminal activities.

The case has once again highlighted the challenges faced by security agencies in combating crime, particularly when individuals within the security establishment are allegedly complicit in criminal enterprises.

Community Reaction

The arrest of a suspected security officer involved in criminal activities has raised questions about vetting processes and internal accountability within Nigeria’s security agencies.

Residents of Ogidi and neighboring communities have expressed relief at the arrests while calling for thorough prosecution to serve as a deterrent to others who may be involved in similar activities.

As investigations continue, the Anambra State Police Command has urged members of the public with useful information to come forward and assist in the ongoing probe.
