Peter Okoye, one-half of the legendary defunct music duo P-Square, has finally addressed critics who have been questioning why he appears to be enjoying life while Nigeria grapples with numerous socio-economic challenges.
The “Personally” crooner recently sparked reactions on X (formerly Twitter) when he posted about having a good time in Abuja. “Enjoyment wan k!ll me for Abuja,” the singer wrote, clearly in high spirits.
However, not everyone was pleased with his carefree post. One concerned follower quickly called him out, writing: “So all these things wey dey happen for the country no concern you? Omo.”
Mr P’s Response: “I’ve Already Played My Part”
Rather than ignore the criticism, Peter Okoye—also known as Mr P—offered a candid explanation for his current stance on activism.
“I’ve already played my part from the last election to the End SARS movement,” he responded. “At this point, I’m choosing to focus on my life and my family. Everyone has their own role to play.”
A History of Activism
Peter’s response references his active involvement in two of Nigeria’s most significant recent socio-political movements. During the #EndSARS protests in October 2020, the singer was among the celebrities who lent their voices and platforms to the youth-led movement against police brutality.
He was also vocal during the 2023 general elections, using his influence to encourage voter participation and political awareness among his millions of fans.
The Right to Rest?
The exchange has sparked a broader conversation on social media about celebrity activism and whether public figures have an obligation to continuously speak out on national issues, or if they’re entitled to step back and focus on their personal lives.
While some Nigerians sympathize with Peter’s position—acknowledging that he has indeed been vocal in the past—others argue that with great platform comes great responsibility, especially during these challenging times.
