A 24-year-old Nigerian man facing serious criminal charges in the United Kingdom has strongly denied allegations that he r@ped a 19-year-old woman, insisting that their encounter was consensual.
Gift Oladele, who operates a cleaning business in Manchester but currently has no fixed address, is standing trial at Mold Crown Court on two counts of r@pe and one count of s3xual assault. The defendant has categorically rejected all allegations against him.
The Allegations
According to prosecutor James Coutts, the complainant, a teenager, claims she was attacked after a night out in Wrexham. She alleges that Oladele dragged her from a main road into nearby woods where the assault occurred.
The young woman told the court she felt “frozen” during the alleged ordeal, stating: “I couldn’t move because I knew what was coming.” She claimed Oladele covered her mouth with his hand and pushed her down a path.
The prosecution presented testimony that the teenager said she was struck multiple times and had her jeans forcibly removed. Upon returning home, she immediately woke her parents, and the police were contacted. When officers arrived, they reportedly found her “crying, shaking and hysterical.”
The Defence
Taking the stand on Friday, March 13, Oladele firmly denied the accusations. “I didn’t r@pe this girl. It’s a lie,” he told the court.
While the defendant acknowledged walking with the woman in the early morning hours last September as she headed home, he maintains that what transpired between them was entirely consensual. He disputes her version of events, claiming she is not telling the truth about what actually happened.
Oladele did concede that leaving the woman in an alley after their s3xual encounter was not “a gentlemanly thing” to do, but he insists no force was involved and denies causing her any distress.
When confronted with evidence that the complainant was in a hysterical state when she arrived home, the defendant stated he had done nothing that would have left her in such condition.
What Happens Next
The case remains ongoing at Mold Crown Court, with the jury set to hear further evidence and testimony from both sides before reaching a verdict.
This case highlights the complex nature of s3xual assault allegations, where competing accounts of the same incident can differ dramatically. The court will need to carefully weigh all evidence presented before determining the truth of what transpired that September night in Wrexham.
The outcome of this trial could have serious implications for Oladele, as r@pe convictions in the UK carry substantial prison sentences. For Nigerians living abroad, such cases also serve as reminders of the importance of understanding consent laws, which can differ significantly from cultural norms back home.
The case continues, and all parties are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
