Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have apprehended a former councilor from Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Council in Lagos State, alongside another suspect who concealed illicit drugs inside baby diapers.
The ex-council chief, Sheleru Sadiq Olalekan, 45, who served two terms representing Orimedu community and currently works as a legislative aide, was arrested following intelligence reports linking him to drug trafficking operations in Lagos State.
Major Drug Haul in Lagos Residence
According to a statement released on Saturday, March 8, by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, anti-narcotic officers stormed Olalekan’s residence in Ilado, Ibeju-Lekki on Monday, March 2, where they conducted a thorough search of the property.
The operation yielded a shocking discovery – 40 kilograms of skunk, a potent strain of cannabis, carefully hidden in one of the rooms.
“In his statement, Sheleru admitted ownership of the exhibit and the property where it was recovered. He confirmed he had previously served two terms as a Councilor representing Orimedu community in Ibeju-Lekki local government council,” Babafemi stated.
The arrest has sent shockwaves through the Ibeju-Lekki community, as residents struggle to reconcile the image of a former public servant with allegations of drug trafficking.
Businessman Caught with Drugs Hidden in Baby Diapers
In a separate but equally disturbing case, NDLEA operatives in the Federal Capital Territory intercepted 32-year-old businessman Emeka Hyginus Okwor on Tuesday, March 3.
Okwor was travelling from Obollo-Afor in Enugu State to Zuba, FCT, when eagle-eyed officers flagged down his vehicle for a routine check.
Upon searching his luggage, officers made a grim discovery – 1,000 pills of tapentadol 250mg, a powerful opioid painkiller, cleverly concealed inside baby diapers to avoid detection.
The suspect reportedly confessed to owning the drugs and revealed he was transporting them to his provision store in Guduwa village, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, where he likely intended to sell them.
Growing Concern Over Drug Trafficking in Nigeria
These arrests highlight the increasingly sophisticated methods drug traffickers are employing to move illicit substances across Nigeria. From hiding drugs in everyday items like baby diapers to involving respected community figures, the drug trade continues to evolve.
The NDLEA has intensified its operations nationwide, determined to break the supply chains that fuel drug abuse and addiction across Nigerian communities.
Both suspects remain in NDLEA custody and will be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
