A wave of anger swept through Apata community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Tuesday afternoon, March 3, 2026, as residents took the law into their own hands, setting ablaze a young man suspected of phone theft.
The incident, which has once again brought the issue of jungle justice to the forefront of public discourse, occurred in broad daylight, leaving the suspect dead before security operatives could arrive at the scene.
How the Incident Unfolded
According to Mathew Paul, an eyewitness who spoke to Punch, the suspect, believed to be armed, had allegedly snatched a mobile phone at gunpoint from an unsuspecting victim in the community.
“The thief, a young man, collected someone’s phone this afternoon and then fired a shot into the air to scare people,” Paul recounted. “However, people noticed that he was struggling with his gun.”
The gunshot, rather than dispersing the crowd as the suspect might have hoped, appeared to have exposed his vulnerability. Residents quickly realized he was having difficulty handling the weapon, and this became his undoing.
“A mob quickly gathered, chased him, caught him and set him ablaze,” the eyewitness narrated. “Before security operatives arrived at the scene, he was already dead.”
The Growing Concern of Mob Justice in Nigeria
This incident adds to the disturbing trend of extrajudicial killings across Nigeria, where frustrated citizens often resort to instant justice against suspected criminals. While the rising cases of armed robbery and phone snatching have left many Nigerians feeling vulnerable and unprotected, human rights advocates continue to warn against taking the law into one’s hands.
The practice of mob justice, popularly known as “jungle justice” in Nigerian parlance, denies suspects their constitutional right to fair hearing and due process. It also raises questions about the effectiveness of the country’s security and justice systems in dealing with crime.
As at the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command had not released an official statement regarding the incident or whether any arrests have been made in connection with the killing.
The incident serves as another reminder of the urgent need for improved security measures and a justice system that works efficiently enough to discourage citizens from resorting to extrajudicial means of addressing crime.
