The Niger State Police Command has apprehended a 59-year-old visually impaired man, Julius Nyikwa, over allegations of repeatedly defiling his wife’s 10-year-old niece in the Keteren-Gwari area of Minna.
According to reports, the suspect allegedly lured the young girl into his room on February 16, 2025, where he committed the heinous act. The victim, who lives in the same compound with her parents and the suspect’s family, is the daughter of the suspect’s wife’s sister.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident in a statement, revealing that this was not an isolated occurrence but rather a pattern of abuse that had been happening repeatedly.
Details of the Incident
“On 16th February, 2025 at about 2pm, a case of rape was received at ‘B’ Division Minna, which indicated that a 59-year-old suspected blind man, Julius Nyikwa of Keteren-Gwari Minna, raped a 10-year-old girl from the same compound,” the PPRO stated.
“Investigations revealed that the suspect’s wife is a sister of the victim’s mother, and they all incidentally live in the same compound as a big family.”
The police spokesperson further disclosed that the suspect had been taking advantage of their living arrangement to perpetrate the abuse. “It was further revealed that the suspect repeatedly lured the victim into his room and had carnal knowledge of her.”
How He Was Caught
The suspect’s arrest came after the victim’s grandmother noticed her entering the suspect’s room during his latest attempt. The grandmother immediately raised an alarm that attracted neighbors, leading to the suspect’s immediate apprehension.
Justice Will Be Served
SP Abiodun assured Nigerians that the law would take its full course in this matter. “The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigations, and the suspect will soon be charged to court,” he confirmed.
This disturbing case highlights the urgent need for parents and guardians to remain vigilant about the safety of children, even within family settings. It also serves as a reminder that perpetrators of such evil acts can be anyone, regardless of physical challenges or family relationships.
The Niger State Police Command deserves commendation for their swift response and commitment to ensuring justice for the young victim.
