President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on state governors across Nigeria to increase support for citizens, warning that the escalating Middle East crisis could trigger higher inflation and further erode the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians.
The President made this urgent appeal during an Eid al-Fitr celebration at his Lagos residence on Sunday, March 22, where he hosted Vice-President Kashim Shettima and 23 state governors.
Preparing for Economic Shockwaves
Speaking candidly to the governors, President Tinubu highlighted the potential economic fallout from rising tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran in the Middle East region.
“We should care more for the vulnerable. I know this Middle East crisis will spike inflation and affect our purchasing power,” the President stated. “The labour union and others will be gearing to ask us to support more due to the effect of the Middle East war and crisis.”
This warning comes at a time when many Nigerian families are already grappling with the high cost of living, with prices of food, fuel, and basic commodities remaining stubbornly high.
Call for Action-Oriented Governance
According to a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu urged the governors to remain steadfast in their commitment to delivering real results for their people.
He challenged them to translate their ideas and visions into concrete policies and programmes that directly improve the livelihoods of citizens in their states.
The President also called for stronger collaboration between federal and state governments in tackling what he described as the “tyranny” of criminals plaguing various parts of the country.
Renewed Focus on Security
Addressing the persistent security challenges facing Nigeria, President Tinubu assured the governors that his administration is intensifying efforts to combat insecurity across the nation.
“Your presence here today and the number show your sincerity, commitment and value for friendship and togetherness,” he told the gathering. “The next phase of our struggle is staring us in the face, and that is the challenge of insecurity in the country.”
The President emphasized that insecurity remains a major obstacle to Nigeria’s development, progress, and prosperity, and pledged to strengthen networks and partnerships necessary to address the problem.
International Support for Security
President Tinubu revealed that his recent trip to the United Kingdom included significant discussions on security equipment and support for Nigeria.
“One of the major discussions in the United Kingdom was on equipment and support. I can report to you that yesterday, again, I had a lengthy discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron. They are collaborating with us for equipment and support,” he disclosed.
The President added that he is making frantic efforts to secure similar commitments from other friendly nations to bolster Nigeria’s security capabilities.
What This Means for Nigerians
With global oil prices typically rising during Middle East conflicts, Nigerians should expect potential increases in petrol prices, transportation costs, and general commodity prices in the coming weeks.
The President’s appeal to governors suggests that state governments may need to consider additional palliative measures, subsidies, or social intervention programmes to cushion the impact on vulnerable populations.
As Nigeria continues to navigate economic reforms alongside global uncertainties, the call for unity between federal and state governments in protecting citizens from economic shocks has never been more critical.
The coming weeks will reveal how state governors respond to this presidential appeal and what concrete measures will be implemented to shield Nigerians from the anticipated economic pressures.
