Summary: A man was arrested after climbing into viral pygmy hippo Moo Deng’s enclosure at a Thai zoo. Both the animal and intruder are safe, but the zoo warns of legal action against rule-breakers.

If you’ve been on social media in recent months, you’ve definitely seen Moo Deng – the adorable pygmy hippopotamus that captured hearts worldwide with her chubby cheeks and playful antics. But her fame has now attracted the wrong kind of attention, and wahala don happen!

On Tuesday, March 17, officials at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand’s Chonburi Province confirmed that a man actually climbed into Moo Deng’s enclosure. Yes, you read that right – someone thought it was a good idea to jump fence and enter where this cute but potentially dangerous animal lives!

How the Man Entered the Enclosure

According to the zoo’s statement, the incident happened around 5:00 p.m. local time. The intruder, identified as a Thai national, took advantage of the period when zoo officials were busy with their evening duties to sneak into the restricted area.

Security footage obtained by Bangkok Post showed the man appearing to film or snap photos of the pygmy hippos on what looked like a tablet device. At the time of the intrusion, Moo Deng was in the enclosure with her mother, Jona, as reported by the Associated Press.

After taking his shots (the photography kind, o!), the man was seen climbing back out of the enclosure. But zoo security had already spotted him, and he was promptly arrested.

The Man Has Been Released on Bail

The zoo’s director, Narongwit Chodchoy, told AP that the trespasser was initially charged and has since been released on bail. Authorities are still investigating why he decided to take such a risky action.

The good news? Narongwit confirmed that the man did not attempt to touch Moo Deng or her mother Jona, and both animals are safe and unharmed. The zoo also reassured fans on their Facebook page that “Moo Deng and her family were unharmed.”

Autthapol “Benz” Nundee, Moo Deng’s keeper, commented on the incident saying, “Fortunately, he did not get bitten.” And thank God for that, because pygmy hippos may be small and cute, but they can still cause serious injury with their powerful jaws!

Why Moo Deng Became a Viral Sensation

For those wondering why all this fuss over a hippo, Moo Deng became an internet sensation in September 2024 when videos of her bouncing around and doing her daily baby hippo business went viral on social media. Her chubby appearance, playful behaviour, and general cuteness overload made her a global star practically overnight.

Since then, the Khao Kheow Open Zoo has received both national and international visitors eager to catch a glimpse of the famous pygmy hippo. But as her popularity grows, so do the security concerns.

Zoo’s Response and Warning to Visitors

Following the incident, the zoo announced that their veterinary team will closely monitor Moo Deng and her family’s behaviour to ensure they weren’t stressed or affected by the intrusion.

In their statement, the zoo thanked concerned fans and members of the public who have been reporting incidents and showing care for the animals. They described this cooperation as “a vital source of encouragement for our staff to diligently care for the welfare of the wild animals.”

However, the zoo also issued a stern warning: visitors must “strictly follow all rules and instructions from staff for the safety of both themselves and the wildlife.” They made it clear that “if any risky behavior is observed, the zoo will take legal action without exception.”

The Lesson Here

This incident serves as a reminder that no matter how cute an animal may appear on social media, they are still wild animals living in controlled environments for their safety and ours. Crossing barriers and entering restricted areas puts both humans and animals at serious risk.

So next time you visit a zoo – whether in Thailand, Nigeria, or anywhere else – remember: admire from a safe distance, follow the rules, and leave the close-up shots to the professionals. No Instagram photo is worth your life or the safety of these precious animals!
