The viral sensation’s safety sparks concern as intruder breaches zoo security

A Thai man has been arrested after breaking into the enclosure of Moo Deng, the world-famous pygmy hippopotamus, at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand’s Chonburi Province.

The Incident

On Tuesday, March 17, at approximately 5:00 p.m. local time, zoo officials confirmed that a man had illegally entered the restricted area housing Moo Deng and her mother, Jona. According to the zoo’s statement, the intruder took advantage of the moment when staff members were busy with their evening duties to sneak into the enclosure.

Security footage obtained by Bangkok Post shows the trespasser apparently filming or photographing the pygmy hippos using what appears to be a tablet device before climbing back out of the restricted area.

No Harm Done, But Concerns Remain

Fortunately, both Moo Deng and her mother Jona were unharmed during the incident. Narongwit Chodchoy, the zoo’s director, told Associated Press that the man did not attempt to touch either animal and that both hippos are safe.

Autthapol “Benz” Nundee, Moo Deng’s dedicated keeper, expressed relief on Facebook, saying, “Fortunately, he did not get bitten.” This statement highlights the real danger the intruder faced – pygmy hippos, despite their adorable appearance, can be aggressive and dangerous when threatened.

Legal Action and Investigation

The man, a Thai national, was initially charged with trespassing and has since been released on bail. Authorities continue to investigate his motives for breaking into the enclosure.

Moo Deng: From Local Star to Global Sensation

For those unfamiliar with this celebrity hippo, Moo Deng captured hearts worldwide in September 2024 when videos of her playful antics at Khao Kheow Open Zoo went viral on social media. Since then, she has attracted visitors from across Thailand and around the globe, all eager to catch a glimpse of the adorable pygmy hippo.

The surge in popularity has brought both joy and challenges for zoo management, who must balance public access with animal safety and welfare.

Zoo’s Response and Future Measures

Following the incident, the zoo’s veterinary team announced they would closely monitor the behaviour of Moo Deng and her family to ensure no psychological stress resulted from the intrusion.

In a Facebook statement, zoo management expressed gratitude to concerned members of the public and fans who reported the incident, calling their cooperation “a vital source of encouragement for our staff to diligently care for the welfare of the wild animals.”

The zoo also issued a stern warning to all visitors: “Strictly follow all rules and instructions from staff for the safety of both themselves and the wildlife. If any risky behavior is observed, the zoo will take legal action without exception.”

A Lesson for Animal Lovers Everywhere

This incident serves as an important reminder that wild animals, no matter how cute or famous they become on social media, deserve respect and protection. The barriers and rules at zoos exist not just to protect visitors, but also to ensure the animals can live with minimal stress and disturbance.

As Nigerians who love and appreciate wildlife, we can all learn from this incident. Whether visiting a zoo in Thailand or closer to home at places like Lekki Conservation Centre or Jos Wildlife Park, remember that respecting boundaries keeps both humans and animals safe.

Moo Deng continues to delight fans worldwide, and thanks to quick action by zoo staff, she remains safe and well-cared for in her home at Khao Kheow Open Zoo.
