Former Premier League star and controversial podcaster Joey Barton has been arrested alongside another man following reports of a serious assault near a golf club in Huyton, Liverpool.
The 43-year-old ex-Manchester City midfielder was taken into custody on Sunday night after Merseyside Police responded to an emergency call at around 9pm near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club.
According to police reports, officers arrived at the scene on Fairway to find a man suffering from injuries to his face and ribs. The victim was immediately rushed to hospital for medical treatment and further assessment.
Two men were subsequently arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding – a serious criminal offense that carries significant penalties under UK law. Police sources confirmed to local media that the younger of the two suspects, aged 43, is Huyton-born Barton, while the second man is 50 years old.

Barton enjoyed a lengthy career in English football’s top flight, making 269 Premier League appearances. He spent six years at Manchester City, featuring 130 times for the club before moving on to other teams including Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers.
After hanging up his boots, the controversial figure briefly managed League One side Bristol Rovers before venturing into the world of podcasting and social media commentary.
These days, Barton hosts “Common Sense with Joey Barton,” a podcast where he discusses topics ranging from football to politics, cancel culture, and grooming gangs – often courting controversy with his outspoken views.
Police Investigation Continues
In an official statement, Merseyside Police confirmed: “We can confirm that two people have been arrested following reports of an assault in Huyton on Sunday 8 March. At around 9pm, emergency services were called to Fairway to reports of a man having been assaulted near to Huyton and Prescot Golf Club.
“The victim was taken to hospital for assessment of injuries to his face and ribs. A 50-year-old man and a 43-year-old man have both been arrested on suspicion of s18 wounding.
“They are both currently in custody where they will be questioned by detectives. Enquiries are ongoing into the incident.”
Both suspects remain in police custody as detectives continue their investigation into the alleged assault.
