Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised alarm over the disturbing reality of terrorists dictating terms to Nigerian citizens, forcing them to abandon their ancestral homes while government appears helpless.

In a strongly-worded statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, March 22, the former Anambra State governor expressed deep concern over reports that terrorists in Borgaja and other communities in Sokoto State are now issuing direct orders to residents, commanding them to flee their homes.

“What we are witnessing in Borgaja and other communities in Sokoto State, and indeed across our country, is tragic. It reflects a complete breakdown of governance and humanity,” Obi wrote, his words echoing the frustration many Nigerians feel about the deteriorating security situation.

When Terrorists Replace Government

The politician painted a grim picture of the current state of affairs: non-state actors have effectively assumed the authority of the state in certain parts of the country, deciding who lives where and under what conditions. This is a reality that would have seemed unthinkable just years ago.

“Reports that terrorists can issue orders for citizens to flee their ancestral homes without consequence are both heartbreaking and unacceptable,” Obi stated. “It means that in parts of our country today, non-state actors have assumed the authority of the state—deciding who lives where and under what conditions.”

His question cut to the heart of the matter: “How did we get to a point where Nigerians are taking instructions from terrorists instead of their government?”

A National Emergency, Not Just a Security Issue

Peter Obi emphasized that what Nigeria is facing has evolved beyond a mere security challenge—it is now a full-blown national emergency that threatens the very fabric of our nationhood.

“I have consistently maintained that no nation can progress when its people live in fear,” he said. “This is no longer just a security issue; it is a national emergency.”

The former presidential candidate reminded both government officials and citizens alike that the primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property—a constitutional duty that appears to be failing in many parts of the country.

Nigerians Deserve Better

Concluding his statement, Obi made it clear that the current situation is unacceptable for a nation with Nigeria’s potential and resources.

“The primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property. Nigerians deserve to live in peace, not at the mercy of terror,” he declared.

As insecurity continues to plague communities across Sokoto, Zamfara, Kaduna, Borno, and other states, Obi’s words reflect the growing anxiety among Nigerians who wonder when—or if—their government will reclaim control and restore safety to affected areas.

The question now remains: will those in power heed this call and take decisive action, or will more communities fall under the shadow of terrorist control?
