Summary: Francis Igwe, traditional ruler and father of ex-Ebonyi Deputy Governor Dr Kelechi Igwe, abducted by armed men while heading to church in Ikwo LGA.
In a disturbing development that has sent shockwaves through Ebonyi State, gunmen have kidnapped the father of a former Deputy Governor of the state, Dr Kelechi Igwe.
The victim, Francis Igwe, who holds the revered position of traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike community in Ikwo Local Government Area, was abducted on Sunday morning, March 1, 2026, while heading to church.
How the Abduction Happened
According to community sources, the elderly royal father was driving himself to worship at his Ndufu-Alike community when armed men on a motorcycle struck.
The assailants reportedly intercepted his vehicle in a well-coordinated operation, double-crossing him and forcing his car to stop. They then dragged him out of his vehicle and whisked him away on their motorcycle to an unknown location.
The brazen nature of the attack, carried out in broad daylight while the traditional ruler was on his way to church, has left residents of the community in fear and anxiety.
Official Response
Sunday Nwankwo, the Chairman of Ikwo Local Government Area, has confirmed the incident and assured the public that efforts are underway to secure the safe return of the traditional ruler.
“We are working closely with security agencies to gather all necessary information that will lead to his rescue,” Nwankwo stated.
The incident adds to the growing concerns about insecurity in various parts of the South-East region, with kidnapping for ransom becoming an increasingly worrying trend that affects both prominent citizens and ordinary Nigerians alike.
As at the time of filing this report, no group has claimed responsibility for the abduction, and no ransom demand has been made public.
The family and the entire Ndufu-Alike community continue to hope for the safe and speedy return of their traditional ruler.
