The ancient city of Katsina was thrown into mourning on February 26, 2026, following a devastating stampede that claimed four precious lives during what should have been a blessed occasion of giving.

The tragedy unfolded at approximately 9:00 p.m. at Kofar Guga Quarters, where a massive crowd had gathered at the residence of well-known philanthropist Alhaji Dahiru Usman Sarki for the distribution of annual Ramadan alms—a cherished tradition during the holy month.

What Happened That Fateful Evening

According to Sadiq Abubakar Aliyu, spokesperson for the Katsina State Police Command, the Central Police Station received a distress call reporting that the peaceful gathering had suddenly descended into chaos. The large crowd, eager to receive the charitable donations, became unmanageable, resulting in a deadly stampede.

“Police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene to restore order and assist in rescue efforts,” Aliyu stated in an official release.

Swift Response, Tragic Outcome

Emergency responders rushed the injured victims to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. Despite the quick intervention of medical personnel, four individuals succumbed to injuries sustained during the stampede.

The Commissioner of Police for Katsina State, Bello Shehu, has expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. He also wished those still receiving treatment a speedy and complete recovery.

A Recurring Challenge

This incident adds to a troubling pattern of stampedes during charitable distributions across Nigeria, particularly during Ramadan and other festive periods. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for proper crowd control measures during such events, no matter how noble the intention.

As Nigerians continue to demonstrate their generous spirit through charitable giving, this heartbreaking incident underscores the importance of safety planning to ensure that acts of kindness don’t turn into occasions of sorrow.

May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace, and may Allah grant their families the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss. Ameen.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Katsina State during this difficult time.
