Female Relative of ISWAP Terrorist Surrenders to Nigerian Troops in Borno

ISWAP Female Terrorist

Summary: A female family member of an ISWAP terrorist has surrendered to Nigerian military forces in Dikwa, Borno State, as part of ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.

In what appears to be another breakthrough for Nigeria’s counter-insurgency efforts, a female family member of a suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorist has voluntarily surrendered to troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State.

According to intelligence sources who briefed renowned security analyst Zagazola Makama on Saturday, the adult female walked into the military base at approximately 6:05 p.m. on February 26, 2026. She surrendered herself to troops of the 24 Task Force Brigade, who are currently deployed in the area as part of the federal government’s ongoing security operations in the North-East.

Details of the Surrender

Preliminary investigations conducted by security operatives revealed that the woman had fled from Tokombere Village, located in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, before making the decision to turn herself in to the Nigerian military.

The suspect is currently being held in military custody, where she is undergoing further profiling and necessary administrative procedures. Security sources indicate that her cooperation could provide valuable intelligence that may assist troops in their ongoing operations against terrorist elements in the region.

Part of Broader Counter-Insurgency Strategy

This latest development is reportedly part of the ongoing counter-insurgency operations under Operation Desert Sanity, a special military operation being conducted by troops of Operation Hadin Kai. The operation is specifically designed to maintain sustained pressure on terrorist groups operating across the North-East region.

The voluntary surrender of individuals associated with terrorist organizations has become an increasingly common occurrence in recent months, suggesting that the military’s kinetic and non-kinetic approaches are yielding positive results. Many analysts believe that the combination of military pressure and amnesty opportunities has encouraged family members and low-level operatives to abandon the insurgent groups.

Operation Hadin Kai’s Continued Success

Operation Hadin Kai, which replaced Operation Lafiya Dole in 2021, has recorded numerous successes in the fight against Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states. The operation has led to the surrender of thousands of insurgents and their families, the liberation of previously occupied territories, and the gradual return of internally displaced persons to their communities.

The military and other security agencies continue to urge members of terrorist groups and their families to lay down their arms and embrace peace, assuring them of humane treatment and proper rehabilitation through the federal government’s de-radicalization programmes.

As Operation Desert Sanity continues, Nigerians remain hopeful that sustained military pressure, combined with development initiatives, will finally bring lasting peace to the troubled North-East region.
