A 48-year-old man who posed as a medical doctor has been sentenced to death by hanging after a botched childbirth operation led to a woman’s death in Ekiti State.

An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti has handed down the death penalty to Olatide Emmanuel, a fake doctor responsible for the death of Mrs. Bosede Falade during childbirth in 2019.

Justice Jubril Aladejana delivered the judgment on Tuesday, finding the 48-year-old guilty of murder and impersonation after a trial that exposed the tragic consequences of quackery in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The Case That Shocked Ekiti

According to the charges filed by prosecutor Kunle-Shina Adeyemo, Emmanuel committed the offences at Odo Ikole compound, Erinmope Ekiti, and Ajebamidele Street, Otun Ekiti. The incident occurred between June 9 and June 24, 2019.

The fake doctor was arraigned on two counts: murder and falsely representing himself as a qualified medical doctor – offences contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. C16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

How the Crime Was Discovered

Reverend Omotade, an eyewitness who testified before the court, recounted how he received a distress call from the deceased’s husband reporting his wife’s death during childbirth.

“On getting to the hospital, I saw the corpse on the stretcher while the self-acclaimed doctor stood beside the stretcher. When I critically examined the body of the deceased, I discovered that the operation was carried out unprofessionally,” Rev. Omotade told the police.

The reverend immediately alerted officers at Otun Ekiti Police Station, who took over the investigation.

The Defendant’s Confession

During cross-examination, Emmanuel admitted he had only completed a “nursing apprenticeship” in Lagos State before setting up his clinic in Erinmope Ekiti in 2019. He confessed to having no formal medical training or certification.

The fake doctor claimed Mrs. Falade came to inform him she was due for delivery. “After some examination, I informed her and her husband that she would be delivered of the baby through a Caesarean section, and they agreed,” he told the court.

Emmanuel insisted the operation was initially successful with both mother and child alive, but claimed the woman later developed complications that led to her death.

Court’s Verdict: “Wickedly Reckless”

Justice Aladejana minced no words in his judgment, describing Emmanuel’s actions as callous and reckless.

“The confession of the defendant under cross-examination that he did not qualify as medical personnel, yet proceeded to open up a human being, knowing he had no training or certification to do so, portrayed the defendant as inherently callous. I find the defendant wickedly reckless in his actions on the now deceased Bosede Falade,” the judge declared.

The prosecution presented seven witnesses and tendered multiple exhibits including statements, medical reports, and photographs of the deceased. Emmanuel’s counsel, Adeyinka Opaleke, did not call any witnesses in his defence.

Finding that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, Justice Aladejana pronounced: “The judgment of this court is that you, Olatide Emmanuel, be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May the Lord have mercy on your soul.”

A Wake-Up Call on Medical Quackery

This tragic case highlights the dangers of unqualified individuals operating illegal medical facilities across Nigeria. Mrs. Bosede Falade’s death serves as a painful reminder of why Nigerians must verify the credentials of healthcare providers before seeking medical treatment.

The Ekiti State government and regulatory bodies must intensify efforts to shut down illegal clinics and prosecute quacks who continue to endanger innocent lives in pursuit of profit.

May Mrs. Bosede Falade’s soul rest in peace, and may this judgment serve as a deterrent to others engaged in similar criminal activities.
