Summary: A recently released ex-convict has been arrested by soldiers in Ondo State for allegedly burgling seven shops and stealing goods worth N1 million in Akoko North West Local Government Area.

In what appears to be a case of “from frying pan to fire,” an ex-convict who had barely settled into freedom has found himself back in the hands of security operatives in Ondo State.

The suspect, who was only recently released from prison after serving time for burglary, has been arrested again for allegedly breaking into multiple shops in the Agbaluku-Arigidi area of Akoko North West Local Government Area.

Caught Red-Handed at Midnight

According to reports, the suspect’s luck ran out when soldiers stationed at Semusemu Junction in Ikare-Akoko intercepted him during routine night patrol around midnight. He was reportedly caught along the Agbaluku-Arigidi Road area under suspicious circumstances.

A source who spoke with Hope Newspaper, an Ondo State government publication, revealed that the suspect allegedly broke into seven different shops in the vicinity and made away with goods estimated to be worth approximately N1 million.

A Serial Offender Confesses

During interrogation by the soldiers, the suspect reportedly sang like a canary, confessing not only to the recent burglaries but also admitting that this wasn’t his first or even second rodeo with crime.

The suspect revealed that he had been jailed twice before for similar burglary-related offences—a troubling pattern that suggests he has made crime a lifestyle choice rather than a one-time mistake.

Handed Over to Police for Prosecution

Following preliminary investigations by the soldiers who apprehended him, the suspect was handed over to the Ikare Area Command of the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution.

This case raises serious questions about rehabilitation programmes in Nigerian correctional facilities and whether enough is being done to prevent ex-convicts from returning to their criminal ways after release.

For residents of Agbaluku-Arigidi and surrounding communities in Akoko North West, this incident serves as a reminder to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies, especially during odd hours.

The quick response by soldiers on night patrol demonstrates the importance of sustained security surveillance in preventing and detecting criminal activities across our communities.

As this case proceeds through the legal system, one can only hope that justice will be properly served and that the suspect will face the full weight of the law for his alleged crimes.
