A tragic incident has left residents of Ido-Osun in shock after an unidentified driver was reportedly shot dead by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service along the Osogbo-Iwo Road on Sunday morning.

The shooting occurred around 10 am at the Onibueja area in Ido-Osun, near a police roadblock, sending shockwaves through the community and raising fresh questions about the conduct of security operatives in the line of duty.

What Happened?

According to eyewitness accounts, the deceased driver was traveling from Iwo towards Osogbo when he encountered security operatives dressed in mufti (civilian clothes) who had allegedly been pursuing him from the Iwo end of the road.

An eyewitness who identified himself simply as Sunday narrated the horrifying incident to journalists. “The man was driving towards the Osogbo end from the Iwo end of the road when some security operatives in mufti shot at his vehicle,” he explained.

“He died right there behind the wheel. The car was riddled with bullets, and people rushed to the scene. The incident happened close to a police roadblock.”

Sunday added that the incident attracted a large crowd of angry residents. “Those who killed him were not wearing uniforms, so we cannot really say who they are. People were very angry over the development,” he said.

Police Confirm Customs Involvement

The spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident and identified the suspected shooters as operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service.

“The incident happened, but those who allegedly fired the shots are Customs operatives. We have arrested two people in connection with the incident. I will brief the press fully in a few minutes,” Ojelabi stated.

Growing Concerns Over Extra-Judicial Killings

This latest incident adds to the growing list of concerns about the activities of security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Customs Service, on Nigerian roads. Many Nigerians have repeatedly called for better training and stricter rules of engagement for security operatives to prevent unnecessary loss of lives.

The fact that the shooting occurred near a police roadblock has also raised questions about coordination and oversight among different security agencies operating in the same area.

As investigations continue, residents of Osun State and Nigerians nationwide await full disclosure of the circumstances surrounding this tragic killing and demand justice for the deceased and his family.
