A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ikeja, Lagos State, has ordered the remand of a teenager, Isreal Mendi, at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre following allegations of defiling his neighbour’s four-year-old daughter.
The disturbing incident, which has sent shockwaves through the Ajah community where the accused resides, allegedly occurred on February 16, 2025.
Details of the Case
Mendi appeared before Chief Magistrate M. F. Onamusi on Friday, but the court declined to take his plea. Instead, the magistrate ordered his remand until April 9, 2026, pending legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
According to the prosecutor, ASP Adegoke Ademigbuji, the teenager allegedly lured the innocent child into his room under the false pretense of sending her to her brother. Once inside, he allegedly forcefully had carnal knowledge of the minor.
The prosecutor informed the court that the offence contravenes Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which addresses defilement of children.
Growing Concern Over Child Safety
This latest case adds to the growing concerns about child sexual abuse in Nigeria, particularly in densely populated areas of Lagos. Child protection advocates have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of laws protecting minors and increased awareness among parents and guardians.
The alleged incident serves as a stark reminder for parents and caregivers to remain vigilant about their children’s safety, even within seemingly familiar environments like their own neighbourhoods.
What the Law Says
Under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, anyone found guilty of defiling a child faces severe penalties, including life imprisonment. The law makes no exceptions, regardless of the perpetrator’s age or relationship with the victim.
The case has been adjourned until April 9, 2026, when the DPP’s advice will determine the next steps in the legal proceedings.
As this case continues to unfold, it highlights the urgent need for communities across Lagos and Nigeria to prioritize child protection and create safer environments for the most vulnerable members of society.
