In a shocking display of lawlessness, hoodlums have attacked the Amotekun command headquarters in Egbedore Local Government Area of Osun State, leaving officers injured and carting away firearms. The incident, which has sent shockwaves across the state, highlights growing security concerns in the region.
The peaceful evening of Monday, March 23, 2026, turned violent when a mob of hundreds descended on the Amotekun office in Awo around 8:00 p.m., transforming what started as a simple football argument into a full-blown security crisis.
How a Football Quarrel Led to Mayhem
According to Yusuf Idowu Abass, the Public Relations Officer of the Osun State Security Network Agency and Amotekun Corps, the trouble began when a young man who had been returning from a local eatery encountered someone he had quarreled with over football matters just the previous day.
“You know how these football arguments can be,” one might think. But what happened next was far from ordinary banter.
The person he had the disagreement with quickly mobilized a gang armed with dangerous weapons, including machetes, and attacked the victim. Fearing for his life, the young man ran to the nearest place of safety he could find – the Amotekun command office.
Amotekun Officers Step In, Then Face the Wrath of Hundreds
When the victim arrived at the Amotekun facility, officers on duty did what they were trained to do – they provided protection and ensured his safety. But the attackers were not ready to let the matter rest.
In what can only be described as a coordinated assault, the hoodlums regrouped and returned with reinforcements. This time, they came in their hundreds, determined to breach the security facility.
The mob launched a vicious attack on the command headquarters, vandalizing office infrastructure, destroying operational equipment, and injuring officers who stood their ground to defend both the premises and the victim under their protection.
Firearms Stolen as Security Breach Deepens
In the most disturbing turn of events, the attackers managed to breach the facility’s security and made away with firearms belonging to the command. They also reached the victim they had been pursuing and further assaulted him with knives and machetes before escaping.
Despite being outnumbered, the brave Amotekun personnel fought back and eventually repelled the assailants, restoring order to the command.
Five Suspects Arrested, Investigation Ongoing
Law enforcement was quick to respond. Five suspects were apprehended at the scene and have been transferred to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Awo for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Osun Amotekun Corps has strongly condemned the attack, calling it “a brazen act of lawlessness and a direct assault on the state’s security architecture.”
Call for Public Cooperation
Authorities have assured residents that efforts are already underway to recover the stolen weapons and bring all those involved in the attack to justice.
The public is being urged to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing any useful information that could help with the ongoing investigations.
What This Means for Osun State
This incident raises serious questions about the security situation in Osun State and the audacity of criminal elements who would attack a security facility in such numbers. It also highlights the dangers faced daily by security operatives who put their lives on the line to protect citizens.
As investigations continue, many Osun residents are hoping that swift justice will be served to send a strong message that attacks on security infrastructure will not be tolerated.
