A police inspector has been gunned down by unknown assailants in Benue State, raising fresh security concerns in the state capital.
Inspector Otor Ejiga, who was attached to the Mega Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp along Gbajimba Road in Makurdi, met his tragic end on Thursday while manning a roadblock near the facility.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the gunmen not only took the life of the officer but also made away with his Type O6 rifle during the brazen attack. The incident occurred at what sources described as an “illegal lone roadblock” close to the IDP camp.
Recovery and Investigation
Following the deadly assault, a police patrol team recovered Inspector Ejiga’s body and transferred it to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital mortuary, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The killing has sparked immediate action from security authorities, who have launched a manhunt for the assailants and efforts to recover the stolen service weapon. A comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack has also been ordered.
Questions Over Supervision
In what appears to be a bid to ensure accountability, the supervising officer has been issued a query for alleged lapses in supervision. Security experts have long warned against officers manning roadblocks alone, particularly in volatile areas, as it makes them easy targets for criminals.
The Mega IDP Camp area has been home to thousands of displaced persons fleeing herder-farmer conflicts and other security challenges that have plagued Benue State in recent years.
As investigations continue, residents and security stakeholders are calling for improved safety measures for officers on duty and better intelligence gathering to prevent such attacks in the future.
May Inspector Otor Ejiga’s soul rest in perfect peace.
