Bandit Attack Claims Lives of Two Soldiers and Vigilante in Bauchi, Seven Attackers Neutralized

A deadly confrontation between security forces and armed bandits has left two soldiers and a vigilante member dead in Gwana community, Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed that the attack on the Joint Task Force base occurred on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at approximately 4:32 PM.

Details of the Attack

According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, the bandits launched a coordinated assault on both the community and the JTF base in Gwana District. The attack resulted in a fierce gun battle that lasted several hours.

During the encounter, two soldiers attached to the 33 Artillery Brigade, Bauchi, alongside one member of the local vigilante group, lost their lives while defending the community.

However, the security forces were not without victories. The Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Police (AKU) successfully neutralized approximately seven bandits during the intense gun duel.

Community Members Abducted

The attack also resulted in the abduction of three residents from the affected community. The bandits managed to escape with the victims during the chaos.

In his official statement, SP Habib confirmed: “Three members of the affected community were also abducted and about seven bandits were neutralized by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Police (AKU) during the gun duel.”

Security Response and Measures

The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has moved swiftly to address the security situation. Additional security forces have been deployed to the area with specific mandates to:

– Restore order and normalcy to the community
– Protect displaced civilians seeking refuge
– Prevent further attacks on the community
– Track and apprehend the fleeing assailants
– Rescue the abducted victims

CP Aliyu assured the public that intelligence gathering and monitoring operations are ongoing to ensure the fleeing bandits are brought to justice and the kidnapped victims are safely recovered.

Mass Exodus from Community

The attack has sparked fear among residents of Gwana community, with many fleeing the area in large numbers. Reports indicate that displaced residents are seeking safety in neighbouring states as uncertainty looms over the security situation.

The Commissioner of Police has promised to provide further updates as the situation develops.

This incident adds to the growing concerns about banditry and insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria, highlighting the continued challenges faced by security agencies in protecting rural communities from armed criminal groups.
