Two Men Sentenced to Death for Killing Newly Married Man in Kano

Kano High Court

Summary: Kano State High Court sentences two men, Aliyu Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya, to death by hanging for killing newly married man Yazid Haruna during armed robbery over phones and N19,500.

A Kano State High Court has handed down the death sentence to two men, Aliyu Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya, for the brutal killing of a newly wedded groom, Yazid Haruna. The convicts will face death by hanging after being found guilty of conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide.

The two criminals, who reside in Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters and Unguwar Malam Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, carried out the heinous attack in the early hours of June 11, 2025.

The Fatal Attack

According to the prosecution counsel, Mr Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, the incident occurred at approximately 2:47 a.m. at Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters. The defendants conspired together and armed themselves with long knives and a machete before launching their deadly assault on the victim.

During the robbery, Hussaini and Zakariyya stole two mobile phones and the sum of N19,500 from Haruna. Tragically, they didn’t stop at robbery—they fatally stabbed the newly married man multiple times, inflicting injuries that led to his death.

The prosecution presented three witnesses and submitted medical reports to the court to establish their case beyond reasonable doubt. Despite the overwhelming evidence, both accused persons denied committing the offences.

The Court’s Verdict

Delivering judgment on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu ruled that the prosecution had successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. She condemned the actions of the defendants as inhuman and expressed serious concern over the alarming increase in phone-related robberies across Kano State.

“This court finds the defendants guilty as charged,” Justice Adamu-Aliyu declared.

The sentences handed down were severe but befitting the gravity of the crimes:

One year imprisonment for conspiracy
Life imprisonment for armed robbery
Death by hanging for culpable homicide

The offences violated Sections 97(1), 298(c), and 221(a) of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State.

Defence counsel, Mr Haruna Saleh-Zakariyya, who presented the defendants to testify in their own defence, had appealed to the court for leniency. However, the weight of evidence and the brutality of the crime left little room for mercy.

A Pattern of Violence

In a shocking revelation, the court recalled that on October 20, 2025, these same convicts had been sentenced to death by another Kano State High Court for killing a lecturer after robbing him of his mobile phone.

This disturbing pattern of violence raises serious questions about security in Kano State and the desperation driving criminals to kill innocent people over mobile phones and small amounts of money.

Rising Concern Over Phone Robberies

Justice Adamu-Aliyu’s concern about the increasing cases of phone-related robberies in Kano State reflects a troubling trend not just in Kano but across Nigeria. Young men, often armed with dangerous weapons, have made it a habit to attack innocent citizens for their phones, sometimes ending lives in the process.

The death of Yazid Haruna is particularly heartbreaking—a young man who had just started his married life, full of hope and dreams, cut down in the prime of his life for a mere N19,500 and two mobile phones.

This case serves as a stern warning to those who engage in armed robbery and violent crimes. The Nigerian justice system, though often criticized for delays, has shown that it can deliver justice when evidence is clear and prosecution is thorough.

May Yazid Haruna’s soul rest in perfect peace, and may his family find the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss.
