Summary: Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey faces new civil lawsuit with allegations of sexual abuse spanning five decades, including claims from his high school days in Los Angeles.
Hollywood heavyweight Kevin Spacey finds himself embroiled in another legal battle as three men have filed a civil lawsuit against the 66-year-old actor, alleging sexual abuse that stretches back an astonishing 50 years.
The case, currently before the High Court in London, has brought shocking new claims to light, including allegations that the two-time Oscar winner’s inappropriate behaviour began even before his rise to stardom.
Allegations From His School Days
According to court documents, Spacey’s first alleged assault occurred in 1976 whilst he was still a student at Chatsworth High School in Los Angeles. The accusation involves the inappropriate touching of a male driver during his teenage years – long before he became the celebrated actor known for films like The Usual Suspects* and *American Beauty.
The alleged victim from 1976 is among seven men who have stepped forward as witnesses in this civil compensation claim, which seeks damages exceeding £30,000.
Pattern of Alleged Behaviour
Elizabeth-Anne Gumbel KC, representing the three claimants, painted a disturbing picture during the pre-trial review. She argued that Spacey “exploited his power and influence as a successful celebrity” to target young men over several years.
According to the barrister, the actor’s alleged modus operandi included grooming his victims before the assaults, sometimes giving them gifts. “The assaults themselves occurred unexpectedly,” Gumbel told the court, describing incidents of inappropriate kissing, touching, and forcing victims to touch him.
Not His First Day in Court
This latest legal challenge comes on the heels of Spacey’s 2023 acquittal at Southwark Crown Court, where he faced criminal charges related to alleged predatory sexual attacks during his time as artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre in London.
Interestingly, some of the current civil claimants had already filed compensation claims before the criminal trial – claims that are now proceeding despite the not-guilty verdict in the criminal case.
Spacey’s Defence
The actor, who did not attend today’s High Court hearing, has consistently denied the allegations whilst acknowledging past mistakes in behaviour.
In a statement ahead of a 2024 Channel 4 documentary about the allegations, Spacey drew a clear line: “I take full responsibility for my past behaviour and my actions, but I cannot and will not take responsibility or apologise to anyone who’s made up stuff about me or exaggerated stories about me.”
He specifically denied ever using his position to solicit sexual favours in exchange for career advancement, stating: “I’ve never told someone that if they give me sexual favours, then I will help them out with their career, never.”
The actor has previously admitted to “bad behaviour” and being “too handsy” at times, but maintains he never groped anyone.
Old Vic Reaches Settlement
In a related development, the Old Vic Theatre announced it has reached an out-of-court settlement with one of the claimants, Ruari Cannon. The theatre’s spokeswoman emphasized that the settlement involved “no admission of liability” and that its terms remain confidential.
What This Means
For Nigerians following international entertainment news, this case serves as another reminder of the ongoing reckoning in Hollywood and beyond regarding abuse of power and sexual misconduct. The case also highlights how victims’ claims – whether decades old or recent – are increasingly being heard in courts.
As the civil case progresses toward a full hearing later this year, Spacey’s once-glittering career remains in tatters, with the actor having lost major roles and industry standing since allegations first surfaced in 2017.
The High Court proceedings continue, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming months.
