The Accident Scene

A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, March 3, at the Arapaja Bridge in the Kudeti area of Ibadan, Oyo State, when a Lexus SUV somersaulted and burst into flames, claiming one life.

The Oyo State Fire Services Agency received a distress call at exactly 3:44 p.m. from Mr. Lateef Jayeoba, who reported that a vehicle was on fire at the location. Acting swiftly, a team of firefighters led by an Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) was immediately dispatched to the scene.

What Happened at the Scene

Upon arrival, fire service operatives discovered that a Lexus Jeep with registration number KSF 297 JF had lost control while in motion. The vehicle reportedly somersaulted into a nearby gutter and immediately caught fire.

The quick response from the fire service team prevented what could have been a more devastating situation, as they successfully stopped the flames from spreading to nearby buildings and properties.

According to the agency’s statement from its headquarters, two male victims were recovered from the wreckage. Sadly, one person lost his life in the incident, while the second victim survived and was handed over to police officers who transported him to the nearest hospital for medical attention.

Cause of the Accident

Preliminary investigations by the fire service agency pointed to reckless driving as the likely cause of the accident. This serves as yet another reminder of the dangers posed by careless driving on Nigerian roads.

The Oyo State Fire Services Agency commended officers from the Nigeria Police Force, Mapo Divisional Headquarters, for providing adequate security during the rescue operation, ensuring the safety of emergency responders and bystanders.

Expert Advice for Motorists

Reacting to this unfortunate incident, Hon. Dr. Moroof Akinwande, Special Adviser on Fire Reform to the Oyo State Governor and Chairman of the Fire Services Agency, issued an urgent appeal to all motorists across the state.

He emphasized the critical need for drivers to strictly observe road safety regulations to prevent avoidable accidents that claim precious lives and destroy property.

Dr. Akinwande also highlighted the importance of fire safety preparedness, urging vehicle owners and homeowners to install functional fire extinguishers in their vehicles and homes. According to him, having readily available fire extinguishers can help curb fire outbreaks at the early stage before they escalate into major disasters.

Stay Safe on the Roads

This incident is a sobering reminder that road safety is everyone’s responsibility. As we navigate the busy streets of Ibadan and other cities across Nigeria, let us remember that our actions behind the wheel can mean the difference between life and death—not just for ourselves, but for our passengers and other road users.

May the soul of the departed rest in peace, and we wish the survivor a quick and full recovery.
