Summary: Lagos State Taskforce seizes 70 commercial motorcycles during operations at Iyana-Iba, Festac, and Mazamaza for violating traffic laws and transporting contraband.

The Lagos State Taskforce has confiscated 70 commercial motorcycles (okada) following a major enforcement operation along the Iyana-Iba axis and surrounding areas.

According to an official statement released by the taskforce, the raid covered several key locations along the Lagos-Mile 2-Badagry Expressway corridor, including Festac First Gate, Mazamaza, and Iyana-Iba.

Why the Crackdown?

The enforcement operation wasn’t just another routine patrol. Officials discovered that many okada riders were engaging in serious violations that go beyond simple traffic infractions.

The taskforce revealed that operators were caught:

– Plying restricted routes in clear violation of state laws
– Obstructing traffic flow on major highways and connecting roads
– Using motorcycles to transport illicit drugs
– Carrying inflammable substances, particularly petrol (PMS), allegedly destined for neighbouring countries
– Generally constituting public nuisance along the expressway

What Happens to the Seized Motorcycles?

The taskforce made it clear that this isn’t a situation where riders can simply pay a fine and reclaim their bikes. According to the statement, all 70 impounded motorcycles will be forfeited to Lagos State government through the courts, in strict compliance with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.

This law gives authorities the power to permanently seize motorcycles operating illegally on restricted routes or engaging in criminal activities.

Sanity Restored, But For How Long?

Officials say sanity has been restored across all affected areas following the operation. However, residents of Lagos know that enforcement is an ongoing battle, as okada operators often return to banned routes shortly after such raids.

The Lagos-Badagry Expressway remains one of the most critical transportation corridors in the state, connecting the mainland to border communities and serving thousands of commuters daily.

What do you think? Are these enforcement operations effective, or does Lagos need a different approach to regulate commercial motorcycles? Share your thoughts in the comments.
