Summary: ECWA Board Chairman Rev. Prof. Sunday B. Agang kidnapped by gunmen in Jos, Plateau State. Church reports series of attacks on pastors and worshippers in Kwara and Plateau states.

A wave of insecurity continues to plague Nigerian churches as Rev. Prof. Sunday B. Agang becomes the latest victim of brazen kidnapping in broad daylight

In yet another disturbing incident that highlights the deteriorating security situation in parts of Nigeria, gunmen have abducted the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), Rev. Prof. Sunday B. Agang, from his residence in Jos, Plateau State.

The Attack

The abduction occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, March 24, 2026, when approximately six armed men stormed the retired pastor’s home in the Farin-Gada community, Jos North Local Government Area. According to family sources, the attackers struck around 5:00 am when residents were still asleep.

The gunmen, described as “undesirable elements” by witnesses, forced their way into the house and held the entire family hostage before whisking away Rev. Agang at gunpoint. Using a getaway vehicle they had brought along, the kidnappers disappeared with their victim before neighbors could raise an alarm.

“Before the family could raise an alarm, the kidnappers had disappeared with their victim in a car brought by the undesirable elements,” a source close to the family revealed.

Church Responds

The ECWA headquarters in Jos has confirmed the incident and reported the matter to relevant security agencies. Church authorities say they are working tirelessly to trace the kidnappers and secure the safe release of their Board Chairman.

Dickson Auta, Public Relations Officer of ECWA, issued an official statement lamenting what he described as “frequent attacks” on church pastors and worshippers, particularly in Kwara and Plateau states.

Pattern of Attacks

This latest abduction is part of a disturbing trend. According to the church’s statement, ECWA has recorded multiple criminal attacks targeting its members and clergy in recent times.

Earlier in the week, armed bandits attacked a church service at Oke Oro LCC in Oro Ago, Kwara State. During that assault:

– Eight worshippers were initially abducted (later clarified as seven worshippers plus Rev. Agang in a separate incident)
– Several congregants sustained injuries of varying degrees
– The attackers made away with phones and other valuables

The brazenness of these attacks—carried out during church services and in residential areas—has sent shockwaves through Christian communities across the affected states.

Call for Prayer and Calm

Despite the gravity of the situation, ECWA leadership is urging members and the general public to remain calm while maintaining fervent prayers for the safe return of all abducted persons.

“The church is calling on everyone to remain calm but prayerful because God is going to fight His battle Himself,” the official statement declared.

Church authorities have promised to provide updates as the situation develops, while continuing to engage with security agencies on rescue efforts.

The Bigger Picture

This incident adds to the growing concerns about insecurity in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region. Plateau State, once known as the “Home of Peace and Tourism,” has witnessed increasing incidents of kidnapping, banditry, and communal clashes in recent years.

Religious leaders, particularly pastors and imams, have increasingly become targets for criminal elements, raising questions about the safety of clergy members and worshippers across the country.

The targeting of places of worship—once considered safe havens—represents a particularly troubling development that has left many Nigerians questioning what can be done to restore security and protect citizens in their homes and houses of worship.

As the search for Rev. Prof. Agang continues, many Nigerians are hoping and praying for his safe return while calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice and put an end to the reign of terror gripping parts of the nation.
