The Labour Party has taken a decisive step towards the 2027 general elections by zoning its presidential ticket exclusively to southern Nigeria, effectively shutting the door on any aspirant from the northern region.

The party’s National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, made this categorical announcement during a press briefing in Abuja, stating that the decision had been finalized after internal consultations within the party’s leadership.

No Room for Northern Aspirants

Speaking with unwavering firmness, Usman declared: “We have one certain decision that we have taken and that is that we will certainly not field any aspirant from northern Nigeria. We have zoned the position to southern Nigeria.”

She went further to emphasize the finality of this decision, adding: “So if any northerner comes now to want to contest elections, we certainly will not accept that.”

This zoning arrangement mirrors the power rotation formula that has become a recurring feature in Nigerian politics, with major political parties often adopting regional power-sharing arrangements to balance ethnic and geographical interests.

Democratic Process to Determine Candidate

While the Labour Party has restricted the presidential ticket to the South, the national chairman was quick to clarify that the party would not impose a specific candidate on its members. Instead, democratic processes will determine who eventually emerges as the party’s flagbearer.

“As for who, I can’t tell you now because then it won’t be democratic anymore. Whoever the people like and vote for during the primaries… could be the candidate,” Usman explained.

This approach suggests that the party is committed to internal democracy, allowing southern aspirants to compete fairly during the primaries without interference from the party leadership.

Legal Victory for Party Leadership

In what appears to be a significant boost for the current leadership, Usman revealed that a legal challenge against the party’s executive had been dismissed by the court.

“To God be the glory, the case was thrown out because it lacked merit,” she said, adding that the presiding judge “stood on truth.”

This legal victory is expected to strengthen the party’s position and allow the leadership to focus on preparations for the 2027 elections without the distraction of internal litigation.

Congress Timetable May Be Adjusted

Citing a surge in party membership, the Labour Party chairman hinted at a possible review of the timetable for ward, local government, and state congresses.

Usman explained that sticking rigidly to the initial schedule could disenfranchise many new members who have recently joined the party.

“If we go ahead to stick to that date… we are going to disenfranchise quite a number of people,” she noted, signaling the party’s willingness to be flexible in accommodating its growing membership base.

Security Concerns: Attack on Party Office

Addressing recent security challenges, Usman confirmed that the Labour Party had formally petitioned the Nigeria Police Force following an attack on its office.

Expressing confidence in the police investigation, she stated: “I’m very, very sure they are going to make sure that they bring to book all those who had a hand in what happened to serve as a deterrent.”

The attack on the party’s office raises concerns about political violence and the safety of party structures ahead of the elections, an issue that has plagued Nigerian politics over the years.

Push for Digital Membership Registration

In a bid to modernize party operations and reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks, the Labour Party is encouraging members to embrace digital registration.

Usman noted that manual registration processes should only be reserved for those without access to mobile technology, reflecting the party’s commitment to leveraging technology for efficiency.

What This Means for 2027

The zoning of the Labour Party’s presidential ticket to the South sets the stage for intense competition among southern politicians eyeing the party’s platform. With Peter Obi having contested on the party’s ticket in the 2023 elections and hailing from the South-East, political observers will be watching closely to see if the party returns to that zone or shifts to the South-West or South-South.

As Nigeria approaches another election cycle, the Labour Party’s strategic decisions will play a crucial role in shaping the political landscape and determining the party’s relevance in the country’s democratic process.
