The Niger State Police Command has apprehended a suspected thief who allegedly attacked a commercial motorcyclist with a pestle in a violent robbery attempt in Bida Local Government Area.
The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the community, occurred on the evening of February 19, 2026, and highlights the growing security concerns facing Okada riders across Nigeria.
The Attack: How It Happened
According to Wasiu Abiodun, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Niger State Command, the suspects employed a calculated approach to carry out their criminal act.
In a statement released on Sunday, February 26, 2026, Abiodun revealed that two men—Ibrahim Ahmed Musa and Ndagi Mohammed Jibril, both residents of Area One, Bida—boarded a commercial motorcycle at the Cool Spot area of Bida around 7:30 PM.
The unsuspecting Okada rider agreed to take them to Ndayako Primary School, Bida. However, what seemed like a routine trip quickly turned into a nightmare.
“On reaching the back of the school, the two passengers forced the bike-man to stop,” the PPRO stated. “Suddenly, one of the passengers, Ibrahim Ahmed Musa, used a pestle to hit the rider on the head. The victim became dizzy and fell down, while the two suspects attempted to escape with the motorcycle.”
Swift Community Response Saves the Day
In what can only be described as divine intervention and community vigilance, the injured motorcyclist managed to raise an alarm despite his condition. His cry for help attracted neighbors and passersby who immediately sprang into action.
The swift response of the community members proved crucial in foiling the robbery attempt. They pursued the fleeing suspects, leading to the arrest of Ibrahim Ahmed Musa along with the stolen motorcycle.
However, his accomplice, Ndagi Mohammed Jibril, managed to escape during the chase.
Police Action and Investigation
Following his arrest, Ibrahim Ahmed Musa was taken to ‘A’ Division Police Station in Bida, where he is currently being held for further investigation. The recovered motorcycle has also been retrieved and is in police custody.
The Niger State Police Command has assured residents that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect, Ndagi Mohammed Jibril, and bring him to justice.
Growing Concerns for Okada Riders’ Safety
This incident adds to the numerous challenges facing commercial motorcyclists across Nigeria. Okada riders, who provide essential transportation services in many communities, frequently face risks ranging from robbery to physical attacks.
The attack in Bida serves as a stark reminder of the dangers these hardworking Nigerians face daily while trying to earn a living. Many riders operate late into the evening to maximize their earnings, often making them vulnerable to criminal elements.
Community Vigilance: A Critical Security Tool
The successful arrest of one of the suspects demonstrates the power of community cooperation in fighting crime. When residents remain alert and willing to respond to distress calls, criminals find it harder to operate freely.
Security experts continue to emphasize that community policing and vigilance remain essential components of crime prevention, especially in areas where police presence may be limited.
What Happens Next?
As investigations continue, the arrested suspect will likely face charges of attempted murder and armed robbery. If convicted, he could face significant prison time under Nigerian law.
The police have urged anyone with information about the whereabouts of the fleeing suspect, Ndagi Mohammed Jibril, to contact the nearest police station or ‘A’ Division in Bida.
The Niger State Police Command continues to work toward ensuring the safety of all residents and commercial operators. This incident underscores the importance of remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities to security agencies.
