The Nigerian Navy has struck another major blow against oil thieves operating in Rivers State, intercepting a massive consignment of illegally refined petroleum products and apprehending eight suspects in a well-coordinated operation.
The successful raid, conducted under Operation DELTA SENTINEL, took place in the Degema, Ogbogoro, and Ogbologo areas of Rivers State, regions that have long been hotspots for illegal oil bunkering activities.
Major Fuel Seizure in Rivers Creeks
Captain AA Folorunsho, Director of Naval Information, announced the breakthrough operation in a statement released on Sunday, March 22, 2026. According to the naval spokesman, the operation was executed by personnel from Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) PATHFINDER following credible intelligence reports about ongoing criminal activities in the area.
The Anti-Crude Oil Theft patrol team deployed for the operation discovered two wooden boats loaded with approximately 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel. This represents a significant quantity of stolen petroleum products that would have otherwise found its way into the black market.
Eight Suspects in Custody, Others Flee
During the operation, naval officers successfully arrested eight individuals directly linked to the illegal oil refining and transportation activities. However, several armed accomplices managed to escape when they spotted the approaching naval patrol team, highlighting the dangerous and well-organized nature of oil theft syndicates operating in the Niger Delta region.
The arrested suspects are currently being held in naval custody alongside the recovered petroleum products. According to the Navy’s statement, both the suspects and the seized items will be handed over to the appropriate law enforcement agencies for thorough investigation and possible prosecution under Nigerian law.
CNS Directive Yields Results
This latest success demonstrates the effectiveness of the strategic directive issued by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, who has consistently charged operational commanders to intensify their efforts against crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, and other maritime crimes threatening Nigeria’s economic interests.
The Nigerian Navy emphasized that this operation reflects the Service’s unwavering commitment to maintaining high operational tempo under Operation DELTA SENTINEL. The Navy continues to rely on intelligence-driven operations, enhanced patrol activities, and inter-agency collaboration to protect Nigeria’s critical national assets and economic resources.
Economic Impact of Oil Theft
Illegal oil bunkering and crude oil theft have cost Nigeria billions of naira in lost revenue over the years, significantly impacting the nation’s economy and affecting the livelihoods of millions of Nigerians who depend on oil revenue for public services and infrastructure development.
The Rivers State waterways, with their maze of creeks and rivers, have unfortunately become major routes for oil thieves and illegal refiners who exploit the difficult terrain to evade security agencies. Operations like this one by the Nigerian Navy are crucial in disrupting these criminal networks and recovering stolen national resources.
The Navy’s continued vigilance and success in intercepting illegal petroleum products send a strong warning to oil thieves that the waterways of the Niger Delta are increasingly becoming more difficult to exploit for criminal purposes.
As investigations continue, Nigerians await further details about the arrested suspects and the full extent of their criminal network.
